Tried the south unit. Launched a bolt for a simple 20 yards shot at a doe, but a anti-hunting tree branch slapped it off course. ****it I try again tomorrow morning.

Two times a week is more than 72 hours. Two times every six days is 72 hours. I also question the intent of the rule, which I believe is that the stand must be removed after 72 hours, not re-used.

Talked to GW today while out here "you have to touch it once every 72 hr" or they can remove it he said he will leave a card if you dknt call within the next 72 hrs he will remove it and you have to call them for retrieving it but he cant stop people from hunting the stand or area those that do are just pure *******s lol

It's a real easy fix to your problem. If walk up a area and there is a stand and you see there has been no activity, ie human activity, throw up your stand next to it. First come gets the area if you want to play that way. Or you can go 100 yds away working the same trail and throw up your stand. We are all hunters and we will work it out, without crying to a Game Warden, they have better things to do with their time.

Car is originally from ALBUGUERQUE, but now registered in COLLEGE STATION. Looks to be registered to the same female just either recently divorced or married in the past few years.

Will be on the lake hunting ducks at our blind spot. Hopefully the weather pushes some more down. Public will probably be packed. Good luck Hoggwild.

Do duck hunters stay on flag pond and the main lake or do they also hunt Yegua and Nails units a lot as well?

I went out this evening and saw a few does even with the strong wind. Saw a few fresh scrapes so hopefully a few bucks will be still be running this weekend.

All I saw was small bucks and does today. Saw a total of 4 Redhead ducks flying along the creeks in morning and evening.

For the fisherman in the group:

Crappie are thick all along the Yegua. From Irwin Bridge down to Newmans. Limits being pulled out daily.

I didnít see any other vechicles in the parking lot or any other hunters where I hunted last Wednesday. I bet any day Monday through Thursday doesnít have a lot of hunters.

For those that use hang-on portable tree stands, whatís your favorite? Any luck with Millenium or Lone Wolf?

Was 2011 when i got him. Tells you how long ive been hunting somerville. LOL
Scored high 140s. 147 and some change i believe.
Climbers are good- there used to be alot of good Water Oaks to climb.. not so much anymore unless your on the creeks banks.

I havent seen a solid shooter all season, Jan06 will be here before we know it and another season in the books.

Late season deer. Post rut/secondary is my goto time. Last 2-3weeks of season is usually the best. Even with it being public lands- these deer get pressured hard on private lands surrounding us. Dont take them long to move in onto the public lands. Floods this yr i think hurt us BAD. I did hear rumor mill of some upcoming changes for us out there next season. We shall see.

Yeah I stopped going! No traffic in my usual spots due to all the flooding. Will be checking it out later this month to see if anything is on the cameras. If not hogs are on the menu early next year.

Iíve been hunting off CR 125 on a little creek not too far from Nails Creek, I park at station/gate 1 and walk in. Iím hunting in morning and if I see the same little bucks and does, I may try the area in the Yegua unit north of CR 134. If any of you hunt that area, just let me know and Iíll stay out, I try to be respectful and stay away from other hunters as much as possible. My other option is just to go deeper down nails creek.

Problem we have at the yegua unit is the duck hunters. And when i tell you every aggie duck hunter goes there. I mean EVERY aggie duck hunter is there. Lol

As many as 10plus vehicles lined up. And they have no cares for deer hunters. Theyll scream and holler..walk around and dogs are the worse.

Yeah I could see a lot of hunters(trucks) off CR 124 in the Yegua unit which I assumed were duck hunters. Itís public land so I understand and Iím trying to stay away from ponds and wet areas as much as possible for my deer hunting. One day I would like to duck hunt out there, Iíve never been duck hunting so I have a lot to research before that day comes. Iím new to hunting at Somerville PHL so I just want to be respectful to other hunters that have hunted it for years and stay out of the way as much as possible.

Every duck hunter out there are fighting over a handful of birds. They just aren't in the area like they should be with all the water.

It's public land man. If you get there at an appropriate time and don't see any trucks it's fair game. If you do, ask what direction they are going and go a different direction.

I am thinking about trying to hunt on Yegua section next year. Had a few questions for you guys. Iím trying to get somethings figured out so I can get things together and do some scouting next year. Can you leave your stand up for the season? Also what type of stands do most of yíall use? Thanks in advance any other advice or tips would be appreciated. Thanks

Hello, this is my first year to hunt out there so Iím definitely not an expert like a lot of these guys.

The rule in the public hunting handbook is you have to remove your stand every 72 hours. Most people donít follow this rule.. I would be more worried about people stealing your stand if you left it out there for a long period of time without using it. I use a climber and Iíve taken mine out of the woods and back in but itís a climber so itís easy. I also lock my climber to the tree when I leave it.

Personally, I would recommend a hang-on stand with climbing sticks to use out there. You can use a climber but there arenít many trees to climb high enough out there because of branches. Another nice thing about using a hang-on stand with climbing sticks is that you can remove the bottom climbing stick and no one can hunt your stand and it would be a lot less likely to get stolen as well. Iím personally not a fan of ground blinds but those are easy to setup and remove but you would really have to camo that up.

Just try and get off the beaten path. Stay away from other hunters and their stands as much as possible. If you think it looks like a good hunting area then there is likely to be a stand there so have numerous areas in mind to scout. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I would recommend using a lock-on and climbing sticks. There aren't enough trees void of low branches to justify using a climber. Ground blinds can work, too, whether pop-ups or just blending into some thick vegetation.

The rules state that you can't leave your stand up more than 72 hours (3 days). I believe the intent of this rule is to prevent a hunter from permanently claiming an area and keeping other hunters from using it. A lot of hunters on Somerville don't follow the 72 hour rule, though. I hunt where I want to, regardless of if there is a stand there already or not. If nobody's in the stand when I walk up then I'll hunt somewhere in the general area (not out of their actual stand, though). If someone is in the stand, I quietly move along and find another place a few hundred yards away. A lot of guys will disagree with hunting an area where there is already someone else's stand, but hunting public land is supposed to be first come, first serve. If they expect to have their own little private spot because they left a stand up all season long, then they need to get a deer lease and stop hunting public land.

I'd try to do your scouting in the off-season. If you aren't seeing deer where you are at and want to find a new area during the season, I'd scout for it midday and, if possible, on a weekday.

It isn't easy hunting out there, but there's a fair amount of deer and some good bucks (in 2 years I've yet to get one, though). Good luck!

Creeks caught about 4 inches or more. They are flowing and the lake has already come up about 2 feet in the last 24 hours.

The rules state that you can't leave your stand up more than 72 hours (3 days). I believe the intent of this rule is to prevent a hunter from permanently claiming an area and keeping other hunters from using it. The 72 hr is easily fixed read other post all I have to do it remove my ladder set it on the ground and put it back up every 72 doesnt "claim" a area but if most would know the area it's not hard to figure out who hunts where if you see a stand YOU dont k pw if it was put up the day before or months ago... be respectful if you see a stand that's not full of leaves and looks like someone hunts it just move on no need to be the normal "public land guy"

The rule says, "commits an offense if that person leaves a hunting blind, stand, tower, or platform in place for more than 72 hours ..." That sounds to me like it can't be in the same tree, or spot, for more than 72 hours whether you visit it and remove the ladder in the 71st hour, or not. But, if the the local game warden interprets it the other way then, I guess, it is their opinion that really matters. I doubt many hunters have the time to drive out there and walk into their stand every 3 days, anyways, unless they live or work within a few minutes of the property.

None of that changes the fact that if I get there first then it is my right to hunt that spot if I want to, regardless of any existing stands that may already be there. Now, most of the time I will move along if it looks like someone else has recently been hunting that stand, but if there's hot sign there and I want to hunt it then I'll do so. Again, walk-in public land hunting spots are first come, first serve.

If you think that by leaving your unoccupied stand out in the woods (legally or illegally) you can dictate where another hunter can and cannot hunt, you are just plain wrong. The first person that is physically there has the right to the spot. I find it odd that you would infer I'm doing something wrong by actually following the rules. The person that is being inconsiderate of other hunters is the one that leaves his stand out there and forces everyone else to try to determine whether or not that guy is going to be hunting it today.

And, I'm curious, what is the "normal public land guy"?

Did anyone else notice that the public hunting book says January 20th as the end of bowhunting whitetail? Just curious if thatís incorrect or if they extended the season just for Somerville PHL?
