I want to get into hunting with a pistol. I can’t decide where I want to start though, revolver .44 Mag or 1911 in 10mm ect.

Mine are in the safe so no pics. The one I've used the most is an open sight Ruger Red Hawk in .44 Mag. I've killed a truck load of animals with it - deer, bear, hogs and a javelina. Good fun!

I have a few.

Glock 20 Long Slide 10mm with RMR. I’ve taken a few deer and pigs with this one.

Glock 21 Long Slide with 460 Rowland conversion and RMR.

Smith & Wesson 657 41 Magnum with Leupold Delta Point.

Current Project Gun. Rock Island 1911A2 double stack 10mm. Planning on a Bar Sto extended/threaded barrel, upgraded trigger and a slide melt for an RMR.

BFR in 475 linebaugh and a ruger blackhawk in 45 colt. Of the two you listed i would definitely go with the 44. There is no replacement for displacement and up to about double the energy of the 10 don't hurt either. Also the fact that bullet profile is a non issue in a revolver is a plus

Of the 2 you mentioned I would definitely go with the .44. Here's what I have:

7 1/2" Ruger Super Redhawk .454 Casull,

This OM three screw now wears a Nikon 2X scope

I like it. It was my first handgun with a scope. I killed several deer with it before I stopped handgun hunting. I also have a Winchester Big Bore '94 in .375. Running shot at about 40 yards. 180 grain lead Truncated cone out of a Para 16-40 .40 s&w. Also killed some hogs with a TC contender 30-30 and 44 mag.

Here is one of my fav hunting handgun. Its a 30FPJ, shooting a 155 gr berger VLD Hunting at 2585 ft pers sec. the picture thru the scope is one of the 3 deer I shot this past season with it. It and my 375 Raptor barrel (308 necked up to 375) will be going to Africa with me this year.

Revolver is generally the better choice. If you handload the 45 colt in a strong action such as the Blackhawk is a good option to the .44 mag.

I just shot my new-to-me Ruger SBH in .44 Mag this afternoon. One thing is clear, the checkered grips are coming off and the smooth ones are going on ! Like trying to hold on to a flying rasp !

I just ordered a S&W 460XVR with a 14in barrel with a break. It should be in early next week. I'm looking for a good pistol scope for it. Any advise? I'm thinking a magnified fixed power so I can extend the range and see better when release the hand cannon.

My handloads with either the 200 grain cast out of RCBS mold, or 200 grain Hornady XTP bullets. With either Longshot, Power Pistol, or 800x powder.

One of the most interesting hunting pistols I have ever had the opportunity to shoot was a custom barreled Encore with a 15 inch barrel with brake, in .375 H&H Magnum Ackley Improved. I had already owned an Encore barrel in .45/70 in a 15 inch, without a brake and found it pretty easy to reach obnoxious level, especially with 500 grain grain cast bullets approaching 1500 fps. But my friend already had handloads with 270 and 300 grain bullets, and since I had a chronograph and a shooting range at my place, I was elected as guinea pig... That pistol delivered the goods.. 2650 fps. with his 270 grain handloads and a solid 2605 average for the 300's! That is almost the same as the standard .375H&H out of a rifle length barrel. And the recoil wasn't nearly as obnoxious as my own .45/70 unbraked barrel with top loads. It seemed the big .375 Improved had enough pressure remaining at the muzzle to really make that brake work. You could tell the brake was doing it's job, as empty cartridge sleeves would be blown off the bench, and you could feel your cheeks ripple a bit at each squeeze of the trigger. We only shot the gun at 50 yard targets through the chronograph, but the loads would stay in about an inch, with the 2x scope we had on it. Not sure what the set up weighed, but he was probably producing around 1000 ft. lbs. of energy per pound of pistol weight, as the 300 grain loads were making some 4500 ft. lbs of muzzle energy. The downside to the gun was the absolute necessity of wearing some kind of hearing protection in the field, even for one shot! I am not sure who made that barrel for him, but I believe either SSK or Bullberry.

I sat at the bench for a minute, looking at those cartridges, and back at the pistol. I'd shot some pretty good sized hardware before, but not like that. I thought I might have an out -of- body experience or even catch a fleeting glimpse of Elvis when I squeezed the trigger...And it did recoil, but not like I thought it would. About like a .454 Casull.

What ammo do you 10mm shooters like to hunt with?

I shoot Underwood Ammo, either 200 grain XTP or 220 grain hardcast. Both perform great on deer and pigs.

I do have some 155 grain Barnes XPBs loaded up but have yet to find the time to try them out.

Need to add this one to the mix since we are talking 10mm.

GP100 6” converted to 10mm. This was before Ruger introduced any of their current 10mm revolvers.

Model 83 Freedom arms .44 with scope, Model 83 Freedom arms .454 Casull, Colt I assembled with a Wilson barrel set up for .45 Super, 6 inch 10mm I assembled, Ruger .22/45 with scope and TacSol upper for squirrels..There are others, but these are the ones carried as "primary " hunting pieces, My Encore wears a rifle barrel at present. The .45 Super is a Colt I assembled, I fit a Wilson barrel, and Ed Brown Beavertail, C&S trigger and sear parts, Novak Extreme duty adjustable sights, a 22 lb. spring and a spring assist guide rod. The 10 mm is a Fusion barrel and slide, fitted to a Caspian lower frame, Ed Brown beavertail, C&S trigger parts has Fusion BoMar style sights.

So I have been reading up on the pistol scopes and I seem to be leaning more toward a fixed power and away from the variable power scopes. Those of you with the variable power scopes... does the eye relief really get too close to the gun when its zoomed in? Do any of yall have experience with the Leupold FX-II 4x28? I know Leupold is good glass and a good company just wondering how the 18in eye relief is on a pistol. Price is around $400 which is good with me as well.

I have a Nikon Monarch 2.5-8 on a TC Encore. It sucks. The eye relief does change with increase in magnification and the field of view SUCKS.

I have no experience with the Leupold you mentioned.

softpoint Eight Point Join Date: Dec 2014 Location: Wixon Valley, Texas Hunt In: anywhere I'm allowed	One of the most interesting hunting pistols I have ever had the opportunity to shoot was a custom barreled Encore with a 15 inch barrel with brake, in .375 H&H Magnum Ackley Improved. I had already owned an Encore barrel in .45/70 in a 15 inch, without a brake and found it pretty easy to reach obnoxious level, especially with 500 grain grain cast bullets approaching 1500 fps. But my friend already had handloads with 270 and 300 grain bullets, and since I had a chronograph and a shooting range at my place, I was elected as guinea pig... That pistol delivered the goods.. 2650 fps. with his 270 grain handloads and a solid 2605 average for the 300's! That is almost the same as the standard .375H&H out of a rifle length barrel. And the recoil wasn't nearly as obnoxious as my own .45/70 unbraked barrel with top loads. It seemed the big .375 Improved had enough pressure remaining at the muzzle to really make that brake work. You could tell the brake was doing it's job, as empty cartridge sleeves would be blown off the bench, and you could feel your cheeks ripple a bit at each squeeze of the trigger. We only shot the gun at 50 yard targets through the chronograph, but the loads would stay in about an inch, with the 2x scope we had on it. Not sure what the set up weighed, but he was probably producing around 1000 ft. lbs. of energy per pound of pistol weight, as the 300 grain loads were making some 4500 ft. lbs of muzzle energy. The downside to the gun was the absolute necessity of wearing some kind of hearing protection in the field, even for one shot! I am not sure who made that barrel for him, but I believe either SSK or Bullberry.

softpoint Eight Point Join Date: Dec 2014 Location: Wixon Valley, Texas Hunt In: anywhere I'm allowed	Model 83 Freedom arms .44 with scope, Model 83 Freedom arms .454 Casull, Colt I assembled with a Wilson barrel set up for .45 Super, 6 inch 10mm I assembled, Ruger .22/45 with scope and TacSol upper for squirrels..There are others, but these are the ones carried as "primary " hunting pieces, My Encore wears a rifle barrel at present. The .45 Super is a Colt I assembled, I fit a Wilson barrel, and Ed Brown Beavertail, C&S trigger and sear parts, Novak Extreme duty adjustable sights, a 22 lb. spring and a spring assist guide rod. The 10 mm is a Fusion barrel and slide, fitted to a Caspian lower frame, Ed Brown beavertail, C&S trigger parts has Fusion BoMar style sights.
