    65' law question for RV's

I have a 38' pusher and I want to tow a utility style trailer behind it. The length of trailer I need will put me over the 65' limit. Does anyone know if a trip permit can be bought, like a permit used for Commercial trucking? I cant find anything on the web with verbiage stating I can buy a trip permit. I would think this would be possible but I was hoping someone on the GS has been there/done that.

Permit probably cost the same as the ticket plus your time, hook it and go

I may or may not have exceeded the length limit a few times.

Never got stopped....having out of state plates may have helped.

In my area, they move giant compressors, water tanks and whole houses down the **** highway, with barely an escort or signage. I’m not too worried about being a couple feet over length.

Ultimate irony is the picture of the S-10 towing the trailer and boat - that’s your state putting that out

Back when the kids were little and we were going a lot I was wanting to pull my 16' boat behind the 5th wheel.

I went to church at the time with a DPS CAPTAIN and I asked him and his reply was he had no idea about any length limit and that I should be fine because they never worried about the private folks but the commercial ones

They may have changed now but I drug that combination all over and never got stopped

And I never measured it either

Prior to our current 5th wheel I towed a smaller 5th wheel and 15' boat, pushing 70', never an issue. Current 5th wheel and 20ft boat would but us close to 80', I estimated that would be easily noticeable, not to mention overweight.

I saw PLENTY busting the limit on a recent trip to Colorado and back.

I may or may not being doing the same soon.

I have no doubt that its being done and not being caught. I do know its being done and getting caught, hence my question. I would be buying this particular trailer and its main purpose is to be used being the RV. The DPS L/W is cracking down on more than just Commercial guys, they are in my area at least. I dont care who is doing it without getting caught or how long they have been doing it. I assure you there is a lot about the 65' law I think is stupid, but its there and they are enforcing it. I would think a permit could be bought to allow travel, I am just not sure. I will know more tomorrow

Give them a call and they will help you with it. You may be able to get it on line once you have talked with them.

I am guessing you have never dealt with a DOT officer doing his job? Here is a good example of the 65' law.
1 ton 4 door LWB hooked up to a 40' GN with the standard 8.5 or 9' neck is over 65' and you are in violation. You can be farm use, commercial-does not matter.
Now take the same truck, pull the bed off, add some fenders and rear-brake, stop, turn lights and register it as tractor, no more 65' law violation
I have had several people bring trailers in wanting us to shorten by 3' so they are legal with 65' law.

Double towed often at about 68 feet....never had an issue....

It was fun pulling that rig on he million dollar highway headed to Ouray, Co

No need to follow those pesky laws. They are there to be broken don’t you know.

Don’t worry about those over weight laws either. They don’t know what the hell they are talking about there either. [emoji51]

In case I’m not clear that’s sarcasm. [emoji6]

well just to update in case anyone might have more info. I spoke to a lady @ (800) 299-1700 that seemed pretty positive I could not buy an over length permit since I am an individual, she put me on hold for a few minutes to confirm with a supervisor or someone with more knowledge. Now if I was commercial, yes I could buy a over length permit and be legal. Since I am an individual, I am limited to 65'. Time to go rogue I guess.
