It was a pretty common thing when I was a kid to know and practice those skills.
I had a few spots on rivers a creeks I'd keep up lean tos built of spruce trees. Cooking tiny sunfish or trout on hot rocks and eating wild berries, roots and leeks.
Each ecosystem presents different challenges and opportunities.

I dabbled in the bush back in my college days, is that what you're talking about?

                  Dabble being the key word!
If they want more than a dabble, they better call in a napalm strike .

Bought the book and watched a few of Canterbury's seminars on you tube. I practice a few skills but lean more to "Leave No Trace" rather than wood craft. The two styles are very much in conflict. In the woods I am primarily focused on fishing, hunting, scouting or hiking. I try and keep accommodations and meals efficient and light. I rarely even start a campfire.

Back in the day I did survival trainings for 1-2 week periods with nothing but the clothes on our backs. Lived exactly as the Indians did except for the clothing. You learn a lot living that way.
Too old for that stuff today but I believe I could still do it if I had too.

I try to keep up with stuff to show the Scout Troop. While was working from home during the Pandemic of 2020 I took up primitive fire. My first bow drill set didn’t work too well so I built another out of Yucca and I’ve made a few fires, pretty cool feeling to make fire with bush materials. Have me a new found respect for early man.
