So, I’m thinking of putting in for the drawings in New Mexico for Elk, Deer and Pronghorn. From what Ive read there’s only a 6% chance that a non-resident will draw out. Ive never done this so my question is, is it worth even trying or go to Colorado and get an OTC tag for Bull Elk. What are the best units that non-resident might have a chance at? It’s a lot of money to have on hold until they do the drawing and if you dont draw you lose the $79 that goes towards your license. Any help, tips or info would be greatly appreciated.

Op NM does a good job publishing their success and application data. But for a small fee to gohunt, epic, Eastmans, etc you can have it in a easier to use format |

I have been pouring over the data in OnX (Toprut). It is a fun research project trying to figure out where you want to play or not play. This will be my 1st year actually applying for anything out West, so I need to figure out what is my actually plan this Fall.

6% of the tags are not great odds...but 100% guarantee that you will not draw if you do not enter. I put in every year and take my chances...you never know when lady luck is on your side...Good luck!

I have the GoHunt membership and have been researching as well. Unit 12 had 100% draw odds for non-resident elk last year with a 17% success rate. Unit 9 was 30%, 21B was 32% and 37 was 30% on draw odds for those. Of those units they are all less than 40% public land with the exception of 21B which is 62%. With all of that being said, I am not looking at putting in for any of those at this time.

Definitely a tough draw. You’ll have a hard time bud getting anyone to give out their unit of choice. Every name in that pot reduces your chance of drawing. I was hesitant to spend money on a GOHUNT subscription, but it’s been the best money I’ve spent to learn each state and their units. Bite the bullet and get it, then have fun researching

I need to add NM as well, getting tired of Wyoming turning it's nose at my applications and hunting the pumpkin patch in CO is getting old.
OP if anyone gives you a unit to apply for, don't do it lol, it's probably a trap. You're gonna have to figure out units on your own but hopefully we get some help with general NM application info and such. |

From what I've read, Colorado's OTC hunt units are completely overcrowded, and the pressure is unnatural, but still a chance at success. If I were seriously planning to go western hunting, I'd try to draw each year in a couple states and if unsuccessful, buy the OTC in Colorado and/or other states.

I was drawn for mule deer rifle in 2B and the next year 2B archery for Elk, so you never know. Its been dry for me the past two years. I have been applying for at least 10 years and have been drawn 3 times.

Might want to delete those posts. You can't hunt those two units on one tag they are unit specific with different hunt codes

You should report your outfitter/guides to the game and fish if they had you hunting both those units. 37 has very limited tags. 36 has the higher number of elk.

Only if you draw that is worth it. Drew 1 time over the many years trying. So I'm leaning to the no side for last 15years or so.

Nice.
GOHUNT lists 100% NR draw odds for the GMU 12 late archery elk season (December 9 through 13). GOHUNT lists 12 applicants for 10 tags. 10/12=/0.83. Not sure how NM handles party apps. I thought that the listed number of tags was a hard limit. They may have awarded 12 tags, if one of the drawn was a party app? Not sure....interesting. |

If you really want to hunt NM, find an outfitter with land owner tags available.

I did an OTC archery hunt a couple of years ago in an area I've been going to for almost 50 years but never hunted in (always summer fishing trips). Figured my inside knowledge would help me outsmart the crowds. Nope! There were bowhunters everywhere in a fairly remote location. I did see some elk, fwiw. Due to availability of information and quality of lightweight backpacking gear, plenty of hunters are willing to join the others going "farther and deeper." There's more than one Cameron Hanes wannabe out there. All that said, if you just want to get away, go for it! Just don't define success as shooting an elk. If you can wait a few years, you might want to start buying preference or bonus points in the states that offer them. You'll eventually get to at least slightly better odds if you are patient enough. |

It’s been ten years since I have drawn an elk tag in New Mexico… Just put in with expectations of not drawing, and if you happen to get lucky and draw, go buy a lottery ticket! I have been a little more fortunate with mule deer, but they haven’t been great units.

I put in for middle of the road tags statistically and I haven’t drawn one in 12 years. They just don’t give out many NR tags compared to resident and outfitted tags. |

My advice is start reading on NM fish and game site.. Pick an animal and a season and start filtering through past draw results. But understand those result only tell you half of the story. It takes time and effort to find a unit worth hunting if they odds are to high.
You might see a tag that has 25% chance of drawing for elk, but there might not be any public land or elk have already migrated out of the unit or onto private. |

I have drawn multiple tags in NM and have only applied for a handful of years as a NR. You can get a decent idea off the state site if you have reasonable odds or if it is very low chance of drawing for you. Yes you can put it for super desirable tags and never draw.

This may be a dumb question but are there any other states beside Colorado that offer OTC tags?
I was under the impression all of the other western states were draw only for non-residents. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
