30th Anniversary Ideas - New Orleans vs. Las Vegas

My wife and I are going to be celebrating our 30th anniversary next month and we have likely narrowed our choices to one of two options, spending a few days in New Orleans or Las Vegas. Neither of us has ever been to either city so I am hoping some of you who are familiar with both cities can give me some direction and recommendations.

Just for background purposes, my wife and I are not big drinkers, maybe a glass of wine or mixed drink with dinner, so going to bars/clubs is not high on our agenda. We are also not big gamblers, but are not opposed to spending some time in a casino to play blackjack or slot machines, but again, the ability to gamble is not a high priority. We are foodies and love to eat great food at great restaurants. From what we have been told, both cities have great restaurants. We know New Orleans has a lot of history, culture, music, and some beautiful architecture. We would probably stay in the Garden District, as we have been told the French Quarter can get a little rowdy. I am concerned about crime in New Orleans, so areas to stay within and areas to avoid would be appreciated, as safety is important. Restaurant, hotel, tour, and music venue recommendations would be appreciated.

For those that would recommend Vegas, what are some hotel, restaurant, and show recommendations. We know we would like to stay in a nice hotel on the Strip. This will be the first vacation I am exclusively responsible for planning since we have been married, so I don’t want to blow it by making a bad choice. Any help is appreciated!

If you like good food and history/culture I would go to Charleston or Savannah over both Vegas and Nola

I would puke if I had to spend another day in NO or Vegas. But I’m not a gambler and I don’t like the stench of a filthy city, so that rules both out for me!!!

Good luck in whatever you decide, and Happy Anniversary!!!

Since you’ve narrowed it between those two, I would say New Orleans even though it has gone down a lot in last few years. Crime is BAD. They used to really crack down on crime since tourism is its life blood but since the puzzling trend to not prosecute criminals started, it’s gotten really dangerous. But way better food than Vegas and more history. You didn’t mention entertainment, but Vegas has shows that can fill some time since you’re not a gambler if you decide that route. Congrats on 30 years!

I would go Vegas. Buy tickets to a few shows. NOLA has become a trash bin. The Mayor there has destroyed one of the coolest tourist destinations. My last trip was there was last year. I may never go back. Nothing at all felt safe and we were usually back inside by 11p. It was dirty everywhere as well. No idea what the city and luzury taxes are going to but it isn’t going where it should

On the GS crew has a copperhead you can have for free. Might make a good anniversary gift.

But, seriiuosly, consider the Flordia keys in winter. Nice warm spot.

Yea, crime is bad in New Orleans which is truly sad. We still have family there and visit a few times a year. I'd say the tourist areas are safe as any city in the country. As someone stated, tourism is the city's life blood.

December is a great time to visit as the weather is mild. The down side is you have to bring both cold weather and hot weather clothes. One day you'll be in shorts and a t-shirt, and the next day you've got long pants and a hoodie on.

Things to do in New Orleans:

                  Restaurants:

                  1. Brennan's
                  2. Cafe Maspero
                  3. Commander's Palace Restaurant
                  4. Cafe du Monde
                  5. Central grocery
                  6. Ralph & Kacoo's
                  7. Deanie's Seafood Restaurant
                  8. Court of Two Sisters Restaurant
                  9. Mike's on the Avenue
                  10. K-Paul's Louisiana Kitchen
                  11. Galatoire's
                  12. Crescent City Brewhouse
                  13. Acme Oyster House
                  14. Copeland's Cheesecake Bistro

                  Things to See At Night:

                  1. Pat O'Brien's
                  2. Cat's Meow
                  3. Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville
                  4. Tipitina's
                  5. House of Blues
                  6. Funky Pirate
                  7. Bourbon Street!
                  8. Harrah’s Casino

                  Things to See Day:

                  1. River Walk (closes at 6pm; leave area)
                  2. Audubon Aquarium of the Americas
                  3. Cajun Critters Swamp Tours
                  4. Creole Queen
                  5. National World War II Museum
                  6. French Market
                  7. Royal Carriages, Inc.
                  8. Street Car Ride
                  9. Audubon Zoo
                  10. Oak Alley Plantation
                  11. Haunted History Tours, Inc.
                  12. Gallery Bienvenu

                  Tip:

If asked to take a bet on someone telling you where you got your shoes at even though they weren’t there when you got’em, just say, “there on my feet!” And move on. It is a street hustle.
