Yes it is a weird question, want to say they are looking how you answer it more so than the actual answer. I remember I was once asked how many miles of roads are in the US.

Well clearly you don't think outside of the box which was the purpose of the interviewer question. Its not like the other answers of Giraffe and polar bear are easy ones either

Yep, I suck at interview questions. I've had two jobs in the last 30 years so maybe I wont have to answer any before I retire.
