Regular or post card draw?

If oaks are dropping find one and hunt that. Oaks are not as abundant as one would think in a river bottom. More ash and bitter pecan.

Good luck. Wee will be down there in Dec

I got drawn for the south on the Oct 16-25 hunt, I'm excited to hunt it I have never been. Some buddies and I are going in a couple weeks after teal and hoping to scope it out a bit before hand.

In late December would the acorns still be a reliable food source for them? Or at that point, is there something else they seek out

Is this the 1st year that baiting is allowed?

Did anyone else draw the Dec. 4th Hunt? I’ll be there solo.

Maybe... I know Gus changed their stance on baiting 3-4 years ago I think? and started allowing it.

You guys need to stop depending on tech and actually get out there and scout, from scouting it a few years ago the south unit deer density is many times more than gus engeling just down the road but engeling looks much better on maps.

Hard to really scout a 15 sq mile area in detail when the hunt is by compartment and you have no idea where you are going to be hunting until the day of the hunt. It would be awesome if they notified you of which compartment you would be hunting ahead of time.

With that said, I would like to go check out the area to get a feel for the terrain and the general area on Monday morning. I've never hunted this type of place before and never visited this wma. Is it ok to just show up on Monday morning and hike into the WMA? Also, is there only one entry point into the WMA?

I'm hiking Guadalupe Peak on Saturday so this will be a good chance for a little warmup hike too.

Are you sure the e-postcard are still by compartment? Theres multiple entry points, I think with the APH permit in hand you are good to scout, I drew a few years ago and bought the LPU permit to be legal to scout back then, the APH wasn't required to be bought to apply for the draw at that time, they changed that in 2019.

I think we will be there then.

Postcard archery hunt

We will be camping in the campground on the south side

As far as scouting goes I don't know that they allow ATV/UTV use any time but on the drawn hunts. So you better be up for some walking.
Plus with them assigning compartments at orientation you may not even get your first, second or even third choice based on your scouting

Gus is different because they have lots more roads to get you closer to areas you want to look at.

I think I rode 2 miles to where I parked my 4 wheeler last year and that was from where we parked the truck after accessing area through private property, don't think you can access that point except during hunts
Matter of fact I only know of 2 access points on the south unit that might be open most of the time and that is the main and the campground.

I don't know that any unit is better than the others so we just took what we were given and made the best of it.
I saw a couple of nice deer down the lanes they had cut but they were not on the unit we were in

If you talking about accessing the back of the south unit off ranch road 210 I think your right you can only do that during the hunt period, the number of locks on that gate at the end of that road is impressive.

It all overflow bottom land off the trinity river. It had been timbered years ago so a lot of the older oaks got cut. There are pockets of oaks here and there that if they have acorns on them it will be like a feeder if you can find them. Last time I hunted there the hogs were awful you couldn’t hunt deer for the hogs. There are slews that will hold water, the river and open fields. I look around these for pinches and trails. It is very flat not a lot of terrain change. Some of the units have rows or roads they will mow. You can walk these and look for trails crossing them. It’s a hard hunt but there are good deer in that bottom for sure.

Let me just make that 13hr 20 min drive from Colorado real quick. Trust me if I was able to Iíd be scouting. But instead trying to use other resources to do my due diligence before a hunt.

I did a little scouting yesterday. I got there early and there were probably 30 deer in the Tarrant Water District area below the dam and another 15 or so in the power line cut in the safety zone when you enter the wma. Lots of bucks too but nothing huge.

Once you drop down into the flat wma area I must say it is pretty intimidating. Nothing but incredibly thick woods and 6Ē of water covering everything along the road right now. Kind of looks like what I would expect hunting south Florida to look like. Many of the ďroadsĒ they have cut through the wma had 6í tall weeds and were under water. They did have some of the cuts north of the park road mowed so I hiked back up that direction and then went back into the woods on some higher ground about 3/4 of a mile. Saw several groups of does and fawns and lots of coyote, deer and hog sign. Tons of hog sign. Didnt find any swamp donkeys though. No snakes and no gators seen. Going to be a very challenging hunt to say the least but easy to see why there are some big deer in there.

Found some great oak trees that should draw deer from all over... but they are in the campground.

Found the book from last year, that was the first year they allowed it they also had some post card hunts for the north unit in 2019, appears Engeling has allowed bait for a long while now

I’ll be there the 16th. This is the first time to be drawn for any hunt, so I’m pretty stocked. I did speak to someone at the office Tuesday, and they said that the areas that have already been mowed, will more than likely be the only thing that will get mowed this year.

One question. After initial check in the first day are you required to check in each day or can we come and go to our compartment or section each day as we want.

Got drawn for 10/2/2020 - 10/11/2020. Don't have a 4 wheeler but got my pickup with 4x4 and good tires. I have no issue packing stands in and deer out but would prefer to use the truck. Anyone know how much you can access with a truck? Also anyone have info on how the compartments work? Is it randomly assigned? Thanks!

Iím hunting the 10/2-10/11. Iíll only be there on weekends(except the first Friday) because I start a new job next week and donít have PTO. I only have a 4x4 truck with stock tires so we may to exchange numbers to pull each other out. I hunted Keechi last year and could drive where I needed and had no issues but it was a dry year. Not sure how the compartments work. I donít mind walking a few miles if needed but walking in water isnít much fun.

Also, Iíll be willing to pay a little cash to anyone who would be willing to Uber me to my compartment via ORV/ATV lol.

I might camp out there, just depends on the heat. I hunted Aransas NWR opening weekend last year and camped at Goose Island SP and ďsleptĒ in my sweat in the tent, but at least they have showers. Maybe a cold front will make it nice camping weather.

If Iím not mistaken, and correct me if Iím wrong, but if youíre not there for the first day, in which they do orientation, then you forfeit your hunt spot. At least thatís what I read.

Also. Who knows the rules on packing out game? Do they have to come out field dressed? Or can they be quartered? Really dont feel like messing with a game cart. Would much rather pack anything out

I apologize if the forum didnít understand but Iíll be there Friday 10/2 for The orientation, but I canít take off all week on my ďusualĒ PTO like I would want. I donít have PTO for that Friday, but Iíll make up the hours. Trust me, Iím not missing out on this hunt, unless it floods and gets canceled.

Iíd like to know this also. I dont mind using a game cart but most of this place will be impossible to get a game cart into from what I saw on my scouting trip the other day. Iíd rather quarter and pack out if that is allowed. I like finding the thick nasty stuff to hunt in and that isnt game cart friendly.

I am same dates. Does anyone know if the Trinity is navigable on that stretch from that launch by the north unit down to the SE corner? If the water situation is what I am reading it is, might be a viable option to access via boat instead of hump it.

Not sure how the compartments work. I donít mind walking a few miles if needed but walking in water isnít much fun.

Also, Iíll be willing to pay a little cash to anyone who would be willing to Uber me to my compartment via ORV/ATV lol.
You can't drive your 4x4 around in there on the clear cuts, for south unit in vehicle with no ATV your basically stuck in the parking lots and paved roads and have to walk in

They weigh them at check station and will tell you if they want them dressed or not, negative on the quartering

I think you have to access the place from where they tell you to go in and thats roads only not the river at least thats what it was on the regular draw hunts.
