I have 3 cameras running at the Grasslands right now. I went out last Thursday to check them and only made it to 2 of them. I brought 3 bottles of water with me but I was sweating so much and the heat got to me; I couldn't make it to the 3rd. One camera wasn't working but here are a few pics of the camera that was working. Note: The dates and times are wrong.

I beg to differ. They don't look healthy at all! They look like Mama's been starving them to death. Look at those racks. They are short tine'd. And got some kinda "funky growth" all over them like some kinda "fungus". Not worth shooting. If I were anyone, I'd go some place else and look for some bucks with some nice "tall slick" tines that don't have that "fungus" looking stuff all over them.

But, if that's what the OP likes, go for it.

Yup, definitely very sick deer. The bucks specifically. We are going to need coordinates so we can help take them out of the population before breeding.

I finally decided to install some Stealth Strips on my Lone Wolf sticks and buckles. I'm holding off on wrapping the stand until I find out whether or not the current setup will eliminate enough noise.

Anybody else run these on their setups?

my tip would be to treat all of your clothes with permethrin. I'm not sure how I survived TX chiggers, ticks, mosquitoes etc for over 35 years before I started using it.

Interesting. So it helps with mosquitos too? I might have to use it then. Just did some quick reading, sounds like most folks say you should use it regardless of scent factor for preventing Lyme disease from ticks. I rarely encountered ticks down at Whitney, not sure how they are up here at LBJ. You ever noticed any negative scent factor using that stuff?

It won't keep the insects from biting you if they get on your skin. But will keep them off your clothing and gear. It will kill ticks on contact. They hate the stuff. I've used it for a number of years. Maybe 20. And around hog holes I've made. Without it, a person could pull 10-30 ticks off from just one trip to one hole.

After it drys, it's pretty scent free. But has a strong chemical smell before it dries fully. I use it on my ground blinds just before season starts. And let them air out good. It helps keep the creepy crawlers from making webs inside the blind if I leave it out. UV is what causes it to deteriorate. But it will last 4-8 weeks depending on the material and exposure.

They say you shouldn't put permethrin on your skin. I do understand why. And there is a reason for that. But there are folks who will tell you otherwise. I'm not interested in intoxicating my liver any more than what it already has (from my younger days ). They say you shouldn't put Round-up on your skin too, if ya get my drift.

One other tip: You can get the concentrated stuff at Tractor Supply. Then dilute to your liking per instructions. Just make sure your clothes and equipment are dry before handling them after the application.

I picked up my cameras that have been out for almost 9 months, and still working. Had quite a few folks on cam and some that even smiled. Glad there are some good people out there that left them alone.

The amount of movement I've seen at LBJ Grasslands relative to Caddo (Bois D'Arc and Ladonia) is substantial. The doesn't seem all that different so I wonder why its the case.

Doing some final scouting at Caddo this weekend. Are Caddo National Grasslands and LBJ listed together for any particular reason?

Only on the NF maps. Caddo has a WMA but LBJ doesn't. They're on the NF maps together because they are both grasslands.

They also have different requirements, as in Caddo requires APH permit, LBJ does not.

The Caddo and LBJ N.G. are managed by one Ranger District and part of the National Forest and Grasslands in Texas. The District office is located in Decatur at 1400 Hwy 287 N. Phone # is 940 627-5475. Jeff Stoney is the District Ranger.

Gotcha. I imagine that makes LBJ a little busier than Caddo. This will be my second year hunting public land, so Iím not sure it will matter anyways. Iím just trying to learn as much as possible, so that every year is better than the last.

Every time I see your about avitar, I think of my last beagle. I'm a believer that while we may have many dogs in our lives were only allowed one Dog. Bailey was my one dog. Just wish I'd have gotten her out more on rabbits.

I do miss running rabbits with my pack. My best Dog, Diesel, just up and died on me last year. I've reached the age and health that and realized it was time to give it up. Beagles are the best in my opinion.

Hope all you LBJ hunters have a great year out there.

I've been out a half-dozen times and have been surprised by the number of other folks scouting. Even got the truck stuck in da mud for a while. Maybe the other folks were just Covid-bored hikers and not hunters.
