Default Will he make 140" ?

Had this dude parked at 20 yards for about 40 minutes Saturday evening. I talked myself out of shooting him as I thought he was only a 3.5 year old deer. I got to study him for a looooong time and think he will be really close to 140" but not sure. I passed him once, so I will pass him if I see him again, but just want to see what yall think on his score.

Pretty deer. Not a great guesser but if I had to guess I’d say he’d be closer to 130

I’m thinking high 120’s, low 130’s. Nice buck!

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Edit: just actually added up guesses and got over 135” so he may be closer to 140” than I thought. Going off just looking I would have said 130. Any trail camera pictures of him?

I have one just like him on our lease. I was scoring him at 136. Shoot him and then put a tape to his rack and we can quit guessing. Good luck.

High 30s - low 40s I think mass pushes him closer to 140.....and definitely older than 3.5 imo.

Probably lost a little weight chasing girlfriends too.

I have a 10 point 140 buck on my wall and he has a 22" spread. I don't think this buck has that width but he has more mass so I'm inclined to think he's close to 140.

Thanks for the replies. I think he is right at 140 myself, his lack of width is what is making it close. Like I mentioned, I was able to watch this guy at 20 yds for about 40 minutes with two other bucks there with him. He was WAY better on antlers but not on body size than the other two. He came in by himself and was there for 10-15 inhaling corn before the other two showed up. I had already made up my mind to not kill him as I just couldnt get a solid read on age. If I could have talked myself into saying he was 5.5 I would have shot him, just couldnt do it.

Just to add to the situation... this is a Schleicher county buck on the 75 acre home place we hunt. He would be the highest scoring deer we have shot off the place in the last 20+ years we have hunted out there. I have thought about this deer constantly since I saw him Saturday evening and keep trying to tell myself I made the right call.

LOL thats funny Kirb. Guess I should have really been asking folks what they think about his age instead of his score. If I felt like he was 5+ years old I wouldnt have thought twice about killing him. There was just something about the way he acted and his look that made me think he was a younger deer.

138-139”, 4.5 IMO. He is a good buck but will be a great deer in a few years. Hard to tell from those pics/angle but If he is 140” it won’t be much more than that.

If he is the biggest deer you have ever seen in the last 20 years, what makes you think you will see a bigger one than him? You may be passing up a great buck hoping he will make it to next year. If you don't shoot him I bet your neighbor will if he sees him. I would ventilate him if I saw him under the same circumstances you described.

No doubt the neighbors would shoot him if they see him, but its a chance Im willing to take. He may get hit by a car or caught up in a fence too, but I cant get him to 5.5 or 6.5 if I kill him now. Odds are probably against me seeing him next year, but I will roll the dice. There are plenty of 5.5 year old straight 8's and plenty of doe to kill to put meat in the freezer.
