Man that’s freakin cool. We’ve always talked about maybe calling one up down there, but it’s not likely since we usually shoot a fox less than 5mins into each set.

I bet he’s not too conducive to good deer hunting, we’ve never had a picture of one but had feeders that the deer activity fell off considerably for a while. Did it seem to spook the deer off your feeder for any length of time?

I won't make it out until the second or third week of gun season. I'm anxious to see if the cats are still there. It makes for an interesting hunt and walking to the stands in the dark.

I saw Terrell County SO's facebook post on that yesterday.

We've had run-ins with illegals a couple of times. The last time as two years ago. Young man on the lease saw 4 walking in the river bed near our camp house. All wearing the same clothing and same color backpacks. The knew where our water was and everything. Kid met them 4 by accident as they came out of the brush. They didn't want to comply when he told them they were going one way and he was going the other. They had a Mexican stand off for awhile but they finally did what the kid told them. Good thing the kids father was ex-military and about 150 yards behind him. He had the .308 trained on them if they started getting frisky.

Lease members dialed 911 and it took the SO 2.5 hours to get there. Wasn't any point in looking for them. They were long gone.

I've had pictures of them walking by a feeder that my fiance like to hunt. she gets a little nervous every time we go out. She likes to hunt alone most times, but I make sure she has her pistol with her.

Headed out there next Wednesday some of my lease mates are there. I gave them a heads up. Our lease is 8 miles north of Dryden just off of Hwy 349 so this was close. Thanks SabreKiller for posting. I carry a six shooter .357 mag with 3 hollow points and 3 snake shot. Probable change that out to 6 hollow points.

I always carry. I have my service weapon or my off duty weapon on me most of the time or in the glove box of the mule when I'm filling feeders. I always check the camp house and surrounding outbuildings pretty good as son as I arrive as well.

Nothing gets your blood pumping like driving up late at night and see people scampering out of the camp house like a covey of quail.

That's where we hunt also. I always carry XD.40, and sometimes a .357. We have seen plenty, but never had an issue yet

Hey y’all. I’ll be hunting Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge tomorrow. I’ll let y’all know how it goes. Won’t be able to make it out to Dryden until December. Good Luck to anyone heading out.

On another note;

I hunt across from Terrell county gas plant. WEBOOST last few years was hit or miss for cell phone service (Verizon). I purchased a 2020 GMC 2500 that has the wifi hotspot and problem solved using wifi calling on my cell phone. Before anyone rants about phone service at the lease, I have a son that is training with MARSOC US Marines and I choose not to be unreachable.

Several of the lease members are out at the lease this weekend. Ya just never know what's gonna show up sometimes. We rarely see an exotic other than Barbado/mouflon sheep crosses that we've nearly eliminated, but this white fallow showed up today and ran across the road in front of one of the hunters.

I'm glad he skimmed him. I prefer not to have any of these running around.

Default Back from the lease....

I returned home Monday from the lease in western Val Verde/Terrell County and we saw a lot of movement this past weekend. Bucks are starting to split up as we saw several good bucks that were alone. On Saturday morning a good 9 and a good 8 got into one helluva fight. The 9 won despite being a little smaller than the 8.

Movement was pretty good in the morning and evening and there was movement all day long, despite it heating up during midday. We drove around a glassed several canyons and always saw movement. In fact, the biggest buck we saw, which was probably the biggest I've seen on that ranch, we jumped at 3 PM and he was in the middle of large, open flat. Very tall, heavy and way outside his ears. I just couldn't get the rifle out fast enough.

Saturday morning, after the buck fight they all scrambled and left by 730. I caught movement coming form my right at 200 yards and spotted a big buck working to my left. He was on a mission. I glassed him as he worked through the brush toward the creek bottom and could tell he was tall and heavy, but he never turned his head my direction. He stopped at the creek bottom and turned his head and I knew this was probably the same 8 point I saw last year. Just a huge 8 and probably the biggest 8 on the ranch. I saw him last year and had a broadside shot at 150 yards, but didn't take it because he'd broken every tine off his left side. All that was there was the brow tine and his main beam.

Anyway, I grabbed my rifle and was gonna give him a dirt nap when he came out of the creek bottom, but he came out farther down than I expected and was half way up the mountain before I found him again. All I could do was watch as he continued on his mission.

I left the blind and went to pick up my fiance around 930 and found a bunch of sheep on the mountain to my left. Barbado and mouflon crosses that we've been trying to eliminate from the lease. We had pretty much done that last year, but I found this group of about 20 rams and ewes. I chased them down the mountain and when they stopped I let the Barrett 6.5x55 eat. I knocked down the biggest ram and they took off. Ultimately I killed two more rams before I decided I needed to pick her up. Everywhere I sat this weekend I heard sheep so we've been invaded again.

I found two more rams in another canyon Monday morning and used the 6.5 PRC. They were a looooooong way off and I didn't have my spotter standing next to me to tell me where I was hitting. I missed the first two shots at a tan colored ram as he ran closer. I'm pretty sure I nailed him on the third shot as he stood broadside. I couldn't find him again when after the rifle recoiled.

We will be headed back out the weekend of December 7. Last year, everything broke loose that week and the bucks were running does like cutting horses. It was fun to watch.

My late Grandpa had a lease in Terrell Co. that had some large Rams on there. I was young but if I remember right they could scale a Mountain like it was no big deal.

When would you guys that regularly hunt Dryden/Sanderson area say would be the prime time to see peak rut activity on mule deer in this area?

Unless you're on MLD, you won't see much rutting activity for mule deer. It typically doesn't kick in until around Christmas.

My old lease at Van Horn, we only caught them really rutting one time in about 30 years. It was a slaughter too. All the big guys were out chasing does and we killed several BIG bucks that year. Never happened again either! LOL!

Appreciate the feedback. Falls in line with what I was thinking. Missed most of last season down there (was my first year in this area) so didn't get to check this out for myself. Used to always hunt mule deer in NM and always hit the rut perfect first two weeks of January, so assumed it would be a bit earlier this far south.
Yes, Sabrekiller- the rut absolute changes everything with mule deer!

About 4 years ago, my hunting partner and I were travelling back to the lease north of Pumpville for the last weekend of the season and we had just turned off FM 349 and gone maybe 1/4 mile when I saw a BIG muley with couple of does about 10 yards off the county road. He could have cared less about us. Big 10 and at least 28" wide. I've got one just like him on the wall that I killed on my old Van Horn lease.

We see muleys on our way in and out of my current lease. They haven't quite made it to us. Yet.

Anyone do any good this past weekend? My other lease members said it was too hot and all they killed was a cull.

Me and the fiance are headed out Friday afternoon and coming back Monday. I'm hoping to catch them chasing pretty good. Last year, the bucks were working the does like cutting horses at this time. We'll see what happens!

Action is starting to pick up. Typically this week is the best for us. We need some cooler weather. Will be out here until Sunday.

My partner took his boss to our place south of Dryden and killed a good muledeer. He said it was dogging a doe. Good luck to everyone headed that way!

My weekend at the lease got cancelled thanks to the *****hole that pulled in front of my stepdaughter right before Thanksgiving. She's having surgery on her wrist today to repair the damage. It will be 3 more weeks before I can even think about going.

Hope all goes well with the surgery! And don't worry the deer will still be there; there is one under every rock

Sweet. We are on on our way out there.
Hopefully, we will see a lot of movement.

I hate to hear about your granddaughter Sabre, I hope the surgery does well. I have to work and not able to hunt the last part of muledeer season is killing me. Good luck to everyone hunting, and please keep us updated.
