    Tribalism and divisiveness

Strongly recommend y’all give this a listen. You can take issue with Sam Harris because he’s an atheist. You can think he’s an idiot because he promotes meditation. You can rage against the accusations that Trump colluded with Russia to get elected. But listen to the data analysis presented by Renee DiResta on this podcast. She mined the data that first showed that the anti-vac movement is actually very small, but uses data manipulation on social media to amplify its footprint. The federal govt asked her to apply the same techniques to ISIS, then to Russia’s impact in the 2016 election. Although it shows that yes, “Russia” manipulated the American public to sway the results of the election, but more importantly and more dangerously, it sowed the seeds of tribalism and divisiveness that are born in social media and then infect the population such that we, the US citizens, are now in the midst of an information and culture war with ourselves. Just understanding that the animosity most people feel towards “the other group” is not based in unresolvable differences but in a carefully constructed and intentional manipulation of what we think we believe will help to see through the bullcrap and begin working to fix it. I hope that more people realize this and begin to have a more open view towards working with the other side to make things better instead of taking delight in ramming a specific political agenda down the opposing party’s throat.

Sam Harris speaks with Renée DiResta about Russia’s “Internet Research Agency” and its efforts to amplify conspiracy thinking and partisan conflict in the United States.

This has been my thought as well. Although, I havent put it as eloquently. The tail wags the dog. We, as a nation, have become pretty easy to manipulate. Not sure how to resolve this because the "powers that be" will perpetuate this for their benefit. Political moderates (in the electorate) are a dying breed, and moderate politicians will soon be extinct as well.

The Russians did not influence the election even 1% as much as the MSM tried to, or the social media giants tried to. Fortunately we still have the EC.
Our media and socialist political correctness are to blame for our current strife, not Russia.

              Did you say "Tribalism"?

Holy crap, enlightenment makes a rare appearance in the P/CE forum! Preach it, brother!

I've followed Sam Harris' work for a while. His critical analysis of unreasonableness on the left and right is right up my alley. I think he runs a great podcast. I've listened to the entire library, and I've found it to be exceptional.

One of my favorites that I highly recommend was one he did with FBI hostage negotiator Chris Voss. Voss is an expert in negotiation. That podcast was not only fascinating, but it helped me in my career and business dealings.

Lmaooooooooooooo!!!!!! I remember the thread on TBH. That term was used just a short 4 or 5 months ago on here and folks were ranting. I was quite surprised that it was not a known term on TBH with as many folks that follow politics as a second career. It is used constantly on both/all sides of the political spectrum and helps people to understand the various nonsensical segments within these political parties.
I agree, Sam's ability to slice thru the "rhetoric & unreasonableness" in politics is incredibly refreshing. Bottom line, the truth remains in the middle (or at least center right or center left) but the tribes continue to play to their minions instead of the AMERICAN citizen. As our grandparents would say, "this to will pass!"

The hard part for people to accept is that their fury might not actually be based on the fact that they are in the right, but instead because a third party intentionally crafted an opportunity to become furious. The two sides went at it, and now neither will accept that not only can they coexist as Americans first, but they won’t even consider talking to each other to figure out a way to work it out. Which, in the case of those, domestically or foreign, who want to destabilize the population and culture, furthers the plan to erode freedom slowly over time.

My biggest fear is that at some point one side will demand tyranny just to score a “win” against its opponent. Pelosi’s recent threat about guns being a national emergency is a hint that we are getting close to the point of no return.

Russia correctly figured out that every political party contains a lot of easily angered, dim witted rubes. It wasn’t about electioneering, it was about sowing deceit. They didn’t create social media accounts that were pro trump or pro Hillary. They created social media accounts that were simply meant to anger the other side. Creating a fake BLM page that said vile things about cops and white people while simultaneously creating fake pages that said vile things about black people and that were complimentary of Trump and white supremacists just to stir up the retards on both sides is pretty genius.

And in the end, after all was said and done, more was said than done... Democrats voted Democrat and Republicans voted Republican..

That "Russian" BS had 0 baring on the election outcome.. Just like it wont the next election..

No one did more damage to the Democrats chance at winning than Obamas legacy and the dems picking Hillary as their candidate.. With those 2 they were done before they even began, even with the MSM on their side.. AND they wont stand a chance the next election either for the simple reason that their leaders are too far left. Over the cliff..

I'm not sure what influenced or informed you to make that claim. The investigations commissioned by the Senate Intelligence Committee reported that it was largely about electioneering, through sowing deceit.

Your example of the messaging targeted at blacks isn't inaccurate, but it falls short of what the investigations reported, which was that efforts to sow deceit were aimed at suppressing the black vote by denigrating Clinton, thereby supporting Trump.

Both reports commissioned by the Senate Intelligence Committee are clear about who the Russians were trying to help. The reports are publicly available in their entirety if you'd like to become informed on the matter.
