    What causes this?

He has a weird spot there on his main beam. Almost looks like a hole or puncture. What causes that? Is that something that would be on the next set of antlers?

I have no history with this buck so don’t know if he was like that last year or not.

Ticks can do this while in velvet. It leaves a sore and usually a hole is the result.

Interesting. I wouldn’t have thought about that but it makes sense.

        Ticks will cause that cavity.

Learnt something new. My last buck I shot has a hole and never woulda guessed a tick caused it.

Could be a tick, or got stuck with stick or thorn

Def botfly larvae. They make their way out right before the antlers go hard. I believe the red neck term is whiskey cup

Also interesting. I can see that being a cause as well.

I always thought the holes came from a bug of some sort but never thought of ticks.....Interesting.

I love any kind character like that though!!

I shot a buck a couple of years ago like that. I assumed it was hit in velvet and damaged but I never really thought about it being caused by a bug or tick. Pretty interesting. I'll try and post up a picture when I get home if I remember.

That almost looks the same as the buck in the picture
