Hey y’all, it's time to crack open the 2021-2022 Panhandle Hunting Thread. But we’re going to do things a little bit differently this year. As you can see from the title, we’re dedicating this year’s thread to Coldgas, a frequent poster in our Panhandle hunting threads over the years.
On December 19, 2020, Jody “PowPow” Powledge, aka Coldgas, went to be with our Lord. Just six days later, on Christmas Day, he was followed in death by his wife, Catherine "Cathe" Hinojosa Powledge. The beloved couple succumbed to complications from COVID-19. As we honor Jody and Cathe this year, we lift up a prayer for the Powledge Family knowing that Jody and Cathe would want our season to be full of smiles, joy, thankfulness, and even a heavy antler or two. Amen! It's hard to imagine we've been going at this for NINE years now! We've had some great threads in years' past, and I'm certain this one will be no exception. Most of the state has had some great spring and summer rains so the herd should be in awesome shape. I haven't seen our place as lush and green since we've owned it! Please post all your Panhandle hunting observations, successes, pics, whatever. If you have any Coldgas hunting stories, feel free to share them as well. The season is just around the corner and preparations are well under way. This thread welcomes all manner of legal means and methods. Just be safe! And as always, this is not a management thread. If you have concerns about what a hunter shoots, etc., take it to another thread. That’s not the discussion here. Let's just keep this thread about soaking up the great outdoors, enjoying time with family and friends, and counting our everlasting blessings. Of course, LDPs are always welcome, if not mandatory. Best of luck to all the Panhandle Boys and Girls this season! Here's to a safe and successful year! Godspeed and safety to all! Sincerely, Kyle ![]() |

I enjoyed his post in the PH threads and he will be missed.
A little over 14”s of rain since May 1st in our part of Briscoe county. It’s green the tanks are full and it should be a good year. Crazy part is they never really seemed to slow down much on the protein. I guess it’s a good thing but man they have ate some feed over the course of the last 14-16 months. |

Good luck panhandle hunters. Very nice of you to dedicate this year's thread to Jody. I had the pleasure of meeting him and his lovely bride at their first bownanza.

Glad to see this start up again. Going to get cameras out this Sunday. Season looks to have some potential as we didn't kill several hit list deer last year. Everything is really green and weeds are taller than I've ever seen. Good luck to everyone!

I’m a new yankee! Got a place in Hall Co. I am excited. I have not had a place to hunt mule deer in Texas before so I am pumped about that. I am hoping the rain may help the turkey hatch and grow some bone! Good luck fellas. It went from a desert to an oasis in two months on our place this spring

Looking forward to another great panhandle season. Thanks for keeping this up every year.
Lots of healthy animals right now. Most rain I can remember at this time of the year. It should lead to amazing horns. |

Finally getting back up there again after not hunting the panhandle for the last 6 years. Looking forward to it and our new lease is looking awesome with all the rain this year. Deer are looking great and conditions couldn't be better.

Great to see our regulars checking in! @longhorn cop, I think McLean should be in good shape. You're less than 50 miles north of me and my place is as overgrown and green as I've ever seen it. Big rains mean big antlers...
@Killer, are you near Turkey? |

I've met a bunch of fine people through TBH and this thread, but I never had the opportunity to meet Jody.
I enjoyed his contributions and send my condolences to his family. We've kept the good fight going in our pastures this spring. Wind and/or hogs did a number on my old camp feeder. This setup needed to last a week as I was bringing the family up for spring break and I hoped someone would get a chance at a hog. It did not make it. Hogs completely destroyed it and has since been replaced. Coons destroyed my varmint cage, so a proper cage was constructed and replaced it. A late freeze had the mechanism malfunction and dumped 1,500 lbs of corn. I put that corn back in the feeder, which promptly molded, clumped and quit feeding. The following month, I got to crawl inside that aflatoxin mess and scoop it out. The setbacks were more than made up for with some quality campfire time with family. Wife tired of looking at my pile of sheds and got all pinteresty. My job was to simply hang it. I bet it weights 200 lbs. Put a new rimfire scope on the 9422 .22 mag. It quickly became my preferred truck gun. Pigs came into camp when the family was up and my boy made a great shot on a sow in front of his new girl friend. The panhandle is set for a great year, I can't wait to see what everybody knocks down. Best of luck to all. |

I go to the panhandle for a 2 day hunt every year but the cranes we shoot would be hard to hit with a bow.

I got a lease east of Mclean last year, saw plenty of deer. Overloaded with does, saw plenty of 8 pt and up. The king stud daddy was a 12 pt. The place is green and the land owner shakes his head and told me he hasn't seen it this green since the early 80s. Have been filling the feeders all year and looking forward to a great season.

Man, I had to mow like crazy to get el ranchito ready for the season. I've owned this place for 12 years now and never seen it this green and thick.
Anyway, got everything mowed and ready, plus a new 600lb Lamco set up and filled to the brim. Hopefully I'll be able to make good on all the prep with a return trip this fall. Best of luck to all! |

I saw a few in Hall County last week when I was there, but not in great numbers. But it was also 100 degrees each day. Need some good weather up north to begin the push south, IMO.

And just like clockwork, there they are.
My place is a doe sanctuary and fawn crib, and during the off-season, I usually only get pics of yearling scrub bucks still trying to hang around mama. But during the first week of every September, the boys show up. Hard to see exact characteristics, but some good potential here. ![]() |

I agree. I've been extremely satisfied with the panhandle muley ARs and saw results after the first year...not so much in quality, but certainly in sheer numbers of bucks that actually survived through the season. Subsequent years the quality became evident.

We hammered the doves pretty good. Limita could be had at our tanks if we were better shots. Other than that just getting things prepped and letting the kids be kids.
