My dad, buddy and I drew Powderhorn!!
Whitetail, Axis, Sambar and bay fishing….can’t get much cooler than that. Very blessed. Anyone else get picked for this? Anyone been on this hunt? Any information is greatly appreciated. We should have some intel as one of our buddy’s/lease-mate drew last year!! ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

We went last season, and all 4 of us shot sambar. 2 stags and 2 cows. I also shot a whitetail doe. We didn't see any whitetail bucks worth shooting. The biologist told us there weren't a lot of axis, so if you saw one, shoot it. We did a LOT of walking and stalking. Some guys had easier hunts than our group. All in all it was a great hunt and we had a blast. Sambar meat is outstanding. Congratulations and good luck! PM me if you have any questions. Out of the 4 we took, 2 were with 30.06, 1 with a .338 Win Mag and 1 with a .308.

My uncle and I got drawn also! Look like us TBH'ers did good with 3'of is getting drawn! We will be staying in Port O Connor. Are Sambar any good eating? It says they have axis there. We may need to all hook up and do a live hunt!

I hunted there last year and killed a very nice Sambar bull. My buddy killed a smaller bull at the very last hour of the hunt. They will assign you a compartment and give you the boundaries of that compartment. Be prepared to hunt the entire compartment and not just the box stand. What I found to work best was to quietly walk around and check all of the marshy areas in my compartment. The sambar love to have their feet wet. Use some sort of digital map e scouting for your compartment so you can see where the marshy areas are and the easiest way to get to them. I saw a large number hunting this method. Hunt all day and don't give up. There are a lot of animals there. The staff that runs the hunt are first class and truly want the hunters to have success. Talk with them and they will hook you up the best they can. If you aren't seeing anything or just want a change of scenery, tell them and they will move you. They will also come and get your Sambar for you so you don't have to pack it out! This is a primo hunt. Enjoy every second of it. The Powderhorn Ranch is an amazing place. 30.06 with 168 grain barnes did the trick with a neck shot. The meat is super tasty! We stayed at the Poco Loco Lodge in Port O. It worked great for us and has a free ice machine to keep your meat iced down if you kill early in the hunt like I did. Good luck!

I was also picked for this hunt. I just created a thread as well, but got a lot of questions answered here. Looking for recommendations on waterproof boots for this hunt.

Congrats fellas. PHWMA is a very unique place to experience. Read last years thread. My father, brother & I took 3 Sambar Stags & 1 axis buck. Passed on legal WT bucks & does as we weren't necessarily hunting for them nor did we need any more meat obviously. I could have taken close to a dozen sambar over the 2 days. It is a short hunt, so prepare for hunting all day. A trophy axis the best animal there in my opinion. I mistakenly shot the wrong axis buck(it already shed its antlers).
It was not a difficult hunt at all. Those sambar are stupid in my opinion(accustom to vehicles). Ask the staff about their behavior. The staff is top notch, very pleasant, helpful and informative. They are there to help and promote hunting. Literally, they haul azz to recover your animals all day long! I don't suggest sitting in the blinds, go actually hunt them and you will have success. DM me any questions you have. Good luck and enjoy! Sent from my SM-G892A using Tapatalk |

Right, I said the same thing while there. I could have speared this one 10 yards from my truck. My brother head shot his at 18yds, just a mere 30 yards from where the stag I shot laid. I should post that video but not sure if it'll last on YouTube
