Kiddos graduating from the Naval academy (boot camp) this next week so we're heading out there on Tuesday. Anything cool to do without having to enter chitcago? Or anywhere to avoid?

Congrats for your Son's choice. What is he striking for. Tell him Aviation is the way to go. A ,P3, outfit, these planes DON"T fit on a ship.

Even went to Electrical "A" school at G.L....
Congrats, to the young man..
IDK- about aviation. Unless you consider helicopters..
I wouldn't change a thing...
I was an Electrician...Aboard two different boats. Both, LST's..(see Avitar)
I'd recommend, the smaller ships. They go more places. (ports)..
You get to know everybody. Food may be better, on a Carrier.
But you'll make lifetime friends, on smaller ships. Just, IMHO..

Wife and I bicycled around Lake Michigan self contained one summer and had zero issues in the Chicago area riding along the lake.


Navy Pier is a neat place. It jets out into Lake Michigan. Bubba Gumps is a good place for chow.

Yes, one more thing.. When service week comes up...
Have him tell them. He can type !..
Have him volunteer for NQS, (non qualified swimmers) clerk..
Otherwise, he'll end up working in the galley. Picking up cig butts.
or any number of disgusting jobs, during service week..

If you don't visit Chicago, you're wasting a trip for incredible food and great tourist attractions. If you stay near the Magnificent Mile, you can walk the whole area. The L-Train transit system will bring you around the entire city. 1 day pass is like $3. The city is very easy to navigate. All the places I listed are SAFE and in N. Chicago. The Southside is where gang violence happens.

Food:
Pizza- Lou Malnatti's, Peqouds, Giordanos
Italian Beef sandwich or a Chicago Dog - Portillo's
Up & Up. - sweeping views of the city and there are a lot of great restaurants, bars and cocktails lounges in Wicker Park.

CUBS are in town, go to a game @ Wrigley !!!
architectural river boat tour - phenomenal views of the city arch. / buildings
Lincoln Park Zoo - FREE
Navy Peir and Ferris Wheel
amazing museums
The Bean in Millennial Park
Lakeshore Drive which is on Lake Michigan
360 Chicago .... 875 N. Michigan Avenue (formerly known as the John Hancock Center) location by the lake on the Near North Side gives it a top-notch view of Lake Shore Drive as well as the rest of the city.

Congrats to you and your family.
However, A small correction is Needed.
ENLISTED go to Boot camp, so they can learn to work, sweat, and toil to complete the Work required for the ships and aircraft.
Officers go to the naval academy to learn how to quilt, play gin rummy, and write non factual performance evaluations. ( 90 percent fall into this group )
