If everyone could keep quiet about the big ones, no one would know...
A google search turned up a bunch of threads on here about big Granger bucks.
https://discussions.texasbowhunter.c...d.php?t=564972
This is probably the most famous and drew all the attention.

Don't take the bait, I'm sure they would love everybody to get angry and cussing at each other, and then poof this thread is deleted like the other Granger threads in the past LOL

I saw a very wide 8ptr in Pecan Grove last Saturday. I'd say he was close to 20". He was bedded down with 4 does on a finger in the brown grass just off the spillway. We counted 22 does during our 4 hour rain walk. Found a nice ladder stand and pvc feeder about middle ways in just before the deep gulley. I was thinking to myself, man this is a nice spot, turned around and hello stand! Beautiful area in there. You don't find that type of looking woods in TN!

Maybe they should put a 4 year blacklist on people that kill bucks there. This would allow some hunter turnover and keep new hunters coming in....

What would you say is the percentage of hunters that live close enough to hunt Granger on a regular weekend basis? How many would be there through the entire season not just during the last week in Nov/ first week Dec?

Looking at just wooded area (per OnX +/-25 acres):
Pecan Grove = 577 acres
Sore Finger = 186 acres
Willis Creek = 516 acres
San Gabriel = 900 acres

I plan on being out there every evening after work and each weekend from now until the end of season. My goal is to add my or my son's name to that buck picture book I keep hearing about.

I am in Fort Worth so definitely not local but I plan on being there most weekends and I am taking off a few days during the weekdays to get out there when things are a little more quiet.

I'd say 10% of who gets drawn actually puts in more than 4 sits/hunts. The new online e-postcard makes it dang near impossible for locals to get drawn via the online draw.

I think they know this, which is why bordering landowners get MLD tags and season starts 3 weeks late for the WMA.

How many permits are usually up for grabs from no shows on orientation day? Do a lot of people show up for the re-raffle?

I was there for standby drawing last year. I'd say 150 people were there.

4" of rain overnight. No crossing creeks today unless you brought a white water kayak.
Slept in my truck with the rain and lightning. Made for good sleeping until the truck would shake with each thunder crack.

150 for standby last year? More like 300. They picked close to 40 people and 10X that walked away...

I just don't get it. They allotted 50 permits last year and gave 40 on standby? So 10 people who got drawn accepted their permits? Or did they add 40 to that?

I can't hunt the first weekend it opens but I'll sure as hell be there to check in and secure my spot. That's 4-5 hours on the road just for a shot at some venison and pork.
It's a small wonder why they don't open more public lands - with these kind of demand numbers it almost doesn't merit the additional resources to operate more public land.

Some very brave guys out there.

My guess is that the game wardens do not enforce the 72 hour rule?

Is there a 72 hour rule on the books for Granger?, I know I've heard other guys refer to it on other public areas but it not a universal rule, every place has their own rules.

So is it 50 permits total including standby permits? Still trying to understand the way this draw system works.

Granger is held to APH rules:

Hunting Blinds, Gear and Equipment
--constructs or places a hunting blind, stand, tower, or platform within 50 yards of any designated road, marked unit boundary, or designated campsite;
--constructs a permanent blind, stand, tower, or platform
--leaves a hunting blind, stand, tower, or platform in place for more than 72 hours or uses metal nails, spikes, screws, or bolts to attach such structures to the timber;
--leaves personal gear, equipment (including decoys), or floating conveyances unattended for more than one hour following the close of legal shooting hours.
--Note: this does not apply to gear or equipment left within a designated camping area or for specific activities scheduled by the department.

It may be in the book not sure but Derrick has always said put your stands where you want and leave them out if you want just respect the private landowners. Also that be prepared that they might get stolen if left out. People have brought it up and he has said technically that is the rule in the book if you want you can take it down and put it right back up if you want but nobody is enforcing it so just be respectful and don't cause problems. All that's ever been said when I have been there.
You bring this up ever year....
