Default Camp Bullis 2018 Season

Just saw that the lottery tickets are available for the 2018-2019 season! Whos going to enter? I also noticed that it appears to be archery only this season. Also see that you have to harvest one doe or three hogs before you can take a buck.

Glad to see they are going to enforce blocking multiple accounts, but people will continue to try and beat the system.

Well I've been stationed here for a little over 2 years and have tried the last two years to get a WTD permit. I'm crossing my fingers and get drawn this year!

Looks like there are about 75 or so more circles than last year, but a lot of those circles were drawn up with no consideration as to terrain, so some will be out in the middle of nowhere, possibly looking like a moonscape.
Lot of folks will be blindly picking a circle without any scouting.

Looks like we're at about 50% draw success on the green screen. With all the added archery spots, I'm surprised we didn't do better. I missed out too.

I got drawn! First time in 3 years of applying. Any advise from anyone that has hunted out there? Are there generally good and generally bad areas to hunt in or are they all generally the same? Really just hopeful to get a doe or two.

There used to be some fields set aside as dove fields but I don't think anything has been done to them in several years. Dove hunting is pretty low out there.

Not many tanks to hunt over, there is one on Lundy's Lane in 3A-3B area. I can't remember the exact TA since its been a while since I've been out there.

I always told the hunters that if you are patient and no one busts the quota on a baby buck, I could see a high percentage of hunters with the chance of taking a 120+ anywhere on Bullis. Now with the doe harvest requirement, it may help you out. However, 10-11B were always low on harvests even though the counts would show that the deer are out there. It may be all the cedar in many of those locations, but we cleared 1,000's of acres while I was there.

Every year there are several "winners" who don't claim their stand and sometimes there are 4-5 lotteries just to fill the spots and all winners who selected or didn't select their stand are omitted from each lottery so only the people that weren't selected are in the pool.

Thanks for the advise. I made my preference list based on google and will await the call to make my pick. First time hunting these hill country deer, accostumed to hunting in east Texas. Looking forward to this.

Picked a circle I hunted back in 1994.
I did pretty well back then and saw a couple of nice bucks I was unable to get a shot at.
They've got some age on them by now!

Hunt hard, not many deer come out of 10 but they are there. One of the biggest deer I ever saw on Bullis was in 10.

As with anywhere you hunt the rut is going to be your best bet, but especially on Bullis.
When the weather cools down the training goes up and it's always going to coincide with the deer season and training of course has priority and hunting gets put on the back burner.
And so with the increased training, the deer become more nocturnal than say a hunter would experience on a private ranch.
Don't kid yourself, hunting whitetail deer is not easy on Bullis, and you will see some huge bucks on game cameras, and they are there, but those are some of the smartest deer in the hill country.
I hunted there for 16 consecutive seasons, and last year was my first time back in 12 years, and I could have had a decent buck on my first sit, and because of the doe first rule I had to let him pass, and eventually took a doe, but I had only seen 5 deer the entire season from Oct. until Jan.
I guess what I'm saying is it can be tough so don't get discouraged, and like mentioned above hunt hard.

From what I read on the site that there were like 12 circles claimed but not locked in.

Training area 1B and 2A are outside of the whitetail hunting areas. The terrain is rough especially along the Cibolo creek with deep creek beds and bluffs where the sheep and goats like to hang out as well as some Axis and especially the hogs.
It's been years since I hunted there in that area, but I did see a mountain lion there in broad daylight jump out in front of my Jeep and run ahead of me for several yards before jumping into the brush. I would suggest a 4x4 for that area.
Mountain lion is off the huntable list btw.

Hogs and turkeys are the most likely wildlife you will encounter in the general areas. You are lucky to see Axis and Aoudad...if you do see anything at all.

Default Camp Bullis Strategy

Anyone that has hunted camp Bullis range, what would be best there? A really well brushed in blind or a tripod stand? Iíve been told the deer are pretty used to blinds in the area, and since there are feeders everywhere for archery circles, I was thinking this year I should go high instead of ground level. Anyoneís thoughts?

I used the word "smart" and got chastised for it, but the deer on Bullis are super wary, for a better word, and that has a lot to do with there being a lot of human contact.
Believe it or not the deer know where they can roam free and in the open such as around the hunting headquarters, or out on or near the ranges, and such where there is a lot of activity, but they are aware (instinct) that they are not being hunted.
I've had good luck hunting there in my younger days where I got up high above in the tree tops to avoid the swirling winds that you have to deal with down lower to the ground.
Ground blinds such as popups have come a long way, and now that I'm older that is the way I'm forced to hunt, and I've been successful, but you have to make sure your setup is right, and that means checking the wind before you decide where the best spot is.
I try if possible to stay more on the edge of a treeline so that I get straight line winds instead of the swirling winds you get inside the brushy openings.
Being high up you get above the trees somewhat and are able to avoid the swirling breezes that the deer will use to approach a feeder.
Deer can come from any direction, but try to pick the spot where they are more consistently using trails and set up for the prevailing southeast wind you'll normally get on opening weekend, and have an alternate setup for when it's from the north. Finding a spot to put the blind where both directions work is going to be gold.

Been running the feeder for 2 weeks straight at my archery circle and dont have a single picture of a deer. So, I cant move or scout any other areas... basically stuck with a junk spot. I could put a camera on Hwy 1604 and get a picture of deer coming to corn. Hope yall have better luck.
