That could be a problem with so many hunts going on. Not too much different from a bow only day lease. Lots of activity.

You need to plan your entrance and exit routes to minimize impact.

You need to think 3 deminsionally when brushing in a ground blind. The brush is very thin in December with the misquites having little to no leaves. You need something in front of your blind by a few feet, brush all around your blind not just the front and often overlooked, cover behind your blind. With nothing behind you it's very easy to create a blob like sihollete. Then open one small window just big enough to shoot from.

It's hard to find on the chap but ideally under the canopy of an oak I'd hard to beat.

No matter what you do their spidey sense may have them on full alert but they tend to calm down within a day or two.

Well I have been drawn for the Dec 11th - 14th . Never been on a hunt like this before so I am super stoked. So many questions.

Is there a thread from past or a list of how the archery hunts are conducted.
I see there is camping so I should be good there.
How do you guys know what number you draw?
Are you allowed to survey your area then set up or specified areas to set up?
Always hunted from a blind over a feeder on a lease.
Some many questions.....argggg.... but so excited...

I have drawn some hunts the last few years, including the Chap. Your permit number no longer has anything to do with the order you actually got drawn. As others have stated, the last two digits are random. Not exactly sure how they know the order after the draw, but it's not by the permit number.

Every time I have been to the chap it has been drawn based on the last two numbers on your permit and this is my 5th trip. Unless something changed the last couple yrs with new manager. Of course there is a new manager agin this yr so we may be in for a new set of rules.

Dead grass and broom weeds is your best friend in that country on filling in brush and giving depth. There is a chance that in early December a lot of stuff will still be green that far south.

Not hatin, he's a friend and I'm happy for him. I would have put in for it with him but we're working opposite rotations during that week.

It's just the luck of the draw.

I'll be there the week before for a standby.

it is based on the order you draw and they do go by permit number at most places. However, no way for you to know what the starting permit number was without asking the staff. For example, two of us were drawn on a hunt last year that only had two spots in the draw. My permit number was something along the lines of 160156 and the other permit was 160157. I do remember with the old system where the last two digits were the actual useful draw order.

I will be there during that hunt, Iíve never camped in the tent camp area but I know the evening camp gets pretty full. We usually get there the day before to set up camp.

Do you have to have a trailer for the rv area or can you tent camp there too

No but why would you want to. There is no water or restroom facilities at the rv camp. The primitive or tent camp area has restrooms and showers. It’s only about half mile down road from each other.

In the field you can use what ever you want to draw deer. Decoy can work there but if you get a couple nosey doe in first they could blow your setup

the primitive camp area is nice. with covered picnic tables(most of them) showers/bathrooms.

fire rings. there is a road from the RV camping to the primitive.

in the RV sites...i think it is mostly paved. Just what I have seen passing by. you can use a generator at the RV sites. I think the primitive is limited to dark or something of that nature...not sure.

Chap has pretty good camping facilities.

FYI. A little change to the ending time of the hunt. My permit states that the hunt ends at the end of normal hunting time on the last day of the hunt Starts at noon on the first day and ends 30 minutes after sunset on the last.
Confirmed with TPWD.

Yep I read that today, was just looking at the permit. Make since. Not much good hunting done that last morning and prob gets everyone packed up and out that morning after quicker. That extra pm time makes a big difference.

So I have a question for yíall veterans. I know we are allowed to feed corn, but can we used a road feeder to throw the corn? Also can we use a golf cart to get us around our unit?

Road chummers are great, hand corning or walking the roads what ever works best. I like a road chummer as it doesn't concentrate the deer along a line. Also, don't corn too heavily in the evening, you'll be feeding them all night if so.

Bring a camera and corn an alternate sight, cell camera's work out there so take one if you have it.

I've never heard of any type vehicle being allowed other than your truck but it never hurts to ask.

Sorry guys, late to the party. Myself and fellow TBHer (MikeJ) got drawn for Dec 4-7 as well. Been there quite a few times on youth hunts and a couple javelina hunts but this will be my first "big deer" hunt.

Don't want to start an argument about preference points but LAST YEAR I had 15 pts and drew a different archery hunt. Came into this year with only 1 preference point and drew Chap of all places. It's definitely a lottery crap shoot.

Haven't decided if we'll be camping or staying in hotel in Cotulla. Will probably depend on the weather. Great thing about all the youth hunts is I been able to see quite a few different compartments over the years. Not sure if that will help but sure if nice to know the area somewhat prior to the hunt. Thanks to all who have shared in the past. Best of luck to everyone and hopefully can get the phone to work so we can be semi-live.

I have taken my electric cart in past hunts, different manager now so I would double check but anything electric should be fine, problem is you prob wonít have availability to recharge with hauling it in and out. I donít take it anymore because your really better off parking at edge of your compartment and walk in. Soon as they hear a truck drive the scenderos they go on alert.

Hunted Chap bout a dozen times in the last 20 yrs, bow only. Killed some doe's and a yote but have seen some gorillies I called TPWD and found out that I was drawn 14th for the second bow hunt, permit number ends in 71, go figure. This is the first time I'll be going solo. Hope to meet y'all in the primitive camp. Good luck.

The pics were good but not chap good. Hoping they just missed some. I’m just hoping we either get some early freezes or it really dries up because with all the rain there it’s liable to be a pretty slow early December hunt.

Youíll be there the 11-14? I know what you mean about it being so green. Iím hoping sitting in trails and hoping they are starting to rut will help. All we need to see is the doe and the big boys will be in tow

4-7th, I have been there during this time and if we catch an early front we could see some pre rut action which is actually my fav, bucks are just starting to roam but still interested in feed.
