He would be my first choice, then the tall 6 pointer and then the crab claw/G2 kicker buck. But I'm not picky.

Ill be giving LBJ a shot this year during bow season since we moved and some of the units are within 30 min of the house now. I figure an old Loc-On Spirit w/ some LW sticks should come in around 19lbs and wouldn’t be bad to haul around.

Going to scout and put out a few new cameras on Tuesday. Haven't been out to LBJ in a few years so this should be interesting. Will start by checking some new spots out then going to my old spots to see if they are still getting traffic.

Those must be private land deer, there are no deer at LBJ....

Went and did a little scouting today, started to take the shotgun and thought it would be heck to carry for a few miles. Ran across a group of about 20 piggies, I wish I'd have toted it now.

Validated some spots I've located before, found a couple of new ones (to me). Found a couple of stands as well.

I will definitely be taking my shotgun with me. Always happy to take a pig or 2 if given the chance.

Ithaca made a 20ga Feather Weight pump that is extremely light. Cut it's barrel down to 19" and you have the perfect bird, rabbit, and hog gun pending the load you put in it. I have a Remington Youth and Ladies 20ga that is fairly light that I sometimes tote while scouting. It comes with a 21" barrel and the Remchoke system. Handles just like a quick handling brush rifle.

Got to scout some units last week over 3 days worth of walking. Getting pumped about the season and some of my findings. Hope I can get out one more time now that it's rained this next week, but we will see.

Headed up tomorrow to pull cameras out and check out a couple extra locations. Anybody else going to be out? Supposed to be hot!

Just an update from the forest service for this season. The Orange trail this year will not be closed to horseback riders for the first 2 weeks of the general season like in the past. It is suggested that riders wear orange but not required.

Iíd shoot him in a heartbeat. 3.5yr old on unrestricted public land is plenty old.

I was worried about doe and fawn health from how dry June and July were, but it looks like they are all holding pretty good weight as far as I can tell from my camera pulls. I am off the Grasslands until I sit for a hunt. I know lots of guys are just starting to do their scouting for season, so no sense to add my presence to the pressure.
Man, it sure is hard to force myself to stay out of the woods until season opens!

My gosh man! That is a monster doe! And fawn! I've never had to look upward toward one! That thing could pummel a man to death!

We got out for a few hours out this morning. Was there before daybreak. Did some glassing right at sunrise and some scouting after that. Found some good sign. Plenty of tracks, Scat and a old scrape where 3 trails come together. One thing I do like about the dry summer, the grass and underbrush is pretty short for ground hunting.

@TexasGrown

Haha, that camera is set about 4 inches from the ground.
The brush in that area is so small that I couldnít find a tree that didnít sway in the wind and burn my battery in a week. This was my solution.
It actually turned out really great as far as the pictures Iíve gotten. I knocked out some dead limbs that were in the way, and it left a single lonely limb just out of frame above the picture. It wasnít 2 days until they started using it as a licking branch. Itís like they are posing!

I did a little scouting this am and pulled cards. I found 2 new spots that I'm hoping work well. One place has 2-3 trails and blocks of timber that come together at an intersection. Another spot is actually pretty close to the gate. Looks like a trail coming from private over into public. As I was walking to it up the ridge, I bumped a doe and 2 fawns that were bedded. I hung a camera in that area, so we'll see what happens. This water hole continues to keep deer coming in. Just need to see if anything changes between now and Oct. Haven't ever hunted water before.

Afternoon fellas. First time bowhunter and out on public land this year. I'm curious about signaling when someone has occupied an area. Is there some sort of protocol to communicate that it's occupied to prevent blowing someone's set?

Not really. I handle most of that by just going farther than most other guys are willing to go. Itís public, so you are bound to run into someone some time. Just ease on to another spot. I always try to have a plan B, plan C, plan D...

I agree with the other guys. If you stumble upon a spot someone else is hunting, walk by or back out to another area. Having plan B, C, D etc. is always a good idea. Nobody should give you crap for it either; it happens.

There are infinite amounts of water holes at LBJ and would be pretty hard to pinpoint where this one is but if someone can find it and kill one, awesome! I just want to see pics posted when killed!

Awesome pics buddy.

I'm going to pull cards this weekend and maybe relocate to a waterhole nearby.

Is it bad that every time I say "pull cards" I think in my head...
"If my camera is still there..."

I always worry about that, but I havenít had a camera stolen in 4 years. I donít put them anywhere near travel paths/trails... and I run them really high, and camouflage them well.

I stopped posting pics of deer from LBJ a long time ago. I learned my lesson. have 4 cams out there this year. Been watching a very nice deer out there for the past 2 years, hoping he'd make. He did, and put on a very decent amount of growth.

Gonna be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Was out scouting yesterday. Some of the areas were blocked and the boundary signs removed. Wasn't sure if some areas had been removed or access had changed. We didnt scout those areas. It sure messed up our backup plans.

Shooter buck number two in the area I intend to hunt. #1 was spotted on the hoof, not trail cam pictures yet. I find it odd that buck #1 was in full velvet 2 weeks ago and this guy doesn't even have velvet tatters on his antlers. Anyway...

Burned area will be a deer magnet once the tender greenery starts coming up due to all the rain. Hunting the edges might pay off if accessible.
