Default Bad hornady ammo

Has anyone else had any issues with hornady sst ammo? I run the vmax through my AR and I really like it. Bought some SSTs for my 308, didn't group amazing, but what I really was concerned about was out of a box of 20 I had 4 rounds fail to fire. Primer strikes on all 4 but nothing but that dreaded click. I ran a full box each of winchester ballistic tips, federal fusions and Barnes ttsx all with zero FTFs. Anyone else ever have this issue? I have two or three more boxes of the hornady now from the same lot that I'm not sure about.

If it is Superformance with the SSTs throw it away and never buy anymore. That stuff is crap. I have never had any issues with any of my guns shooting hornady loads until I went with Superformance. Had two different guns throw it all over the paper.

It's not the bullets fault. They are shooting too hot for your gun.

They are the superformance SSTs. Never had any ammo ever FTF with a primer strike on this rifle before. Guess I'll just sell the rest of them. I actually had really good groups with the winchester Ballistic silvertips which surprised me because I know a lot of people hate them lol.

The bottom group of 3 was from the hornady, then another 3 shot group above that with the winchester, tried to make an adjustment by moving crosshairs to POI and bumped my gun lol. So took another shot to see where I was. That was the single low and right. Made my adjustment and did another 2 shot group. All but that loose group at the bottom were the winchester. Ha I ran out of ammo since I only had 6 rounds of winchester I found in my range bag. Wish I would have just started with them instead of burnin through a bunch of hornady first. All of these were at 100m.

Well that is unfortunate about that ammo LOT. Fortunately, I've never had any issue's with the SST Hornady ammo.

I know the bullet has nothing to do with it. My point was that they are inaccurate rounds fired through most rifles. I have talked to two different gun smiths that have said the powder they use to get the velocity burns inconsistently, and they have rarely seen them perform in many rifles.

Glad to see this post!

I bought some Hornady Superperformance SST in .257roberts a few weeks ago and they shot GREAT at the range. Fast forward to Saturday, I was hunting in Laredo and tried to shoot a bobcat...click! Ejected, cycled another round, and missed!

I looked at the shell when we got back to camp and it has a soft primer strike. When looking at the shell next to another, the primer seems to be set in a little bit. I will definitely be contacting Hornady.

I've never been too happy with Hornady loads. My new 270 is the first gun I've had that Hornady shot the best from, that being the American Whitetail. All other guns have shot cheaper rounds the tightest and most consistent. Hornady has never been a tight group shooter until now. I do, however, plan to try loading SST's when I finish purchasing all my reloading components.

If your gun likes them shoot them for some reason a lot of factory rifles don't have a fast enuf twist but you should check and see if the. Boxes you have are from the same batch they may of had a bad batch of primers contact. Hornady they should make it right

I also had problems with Hornady American Whitetail in .243, 2 FTF and one that fired but with very little velocity. Concerned as I have 2 boxes in 30.06 I haven't shot yet.

I am a superformance fanatic. My tikka .308 gobles them up and puts groups less than 1 inch at 100 yards. I went through 6 boxes in .270 and 4 boxes in .308. Never had a single FTF , and have not missed when shooting at game.
I wish the best of luck to you, and like mentioned already, contact hornady.

My son had 4 misfires in one box of the sst's. Had great primer strikes, box was brand new from big name store. He shoots a marlin 243 and will go back to the trusty core-locks which have never let either of us down.

Never had an FTF, but I've also had problems with the Superperformance spraying rounds. I like the Hornady Custom ammo, but that Superperformance blended powder is just too unreliable for me.

Well, maybe they have gotten too big and don't care that much anymore. However, in their business they better care because someone could easily get hurt using their products that would cost them a lot of money. I guess the best thing to do if they won't take care of you then, is vote with your pocketbook and don't do business with them.

no problem with firing. just that they group about 8" to the right of my normal reloads and Remington Corlokts. Shooting .308 with 150 grain. Don't need the extra 200-300 fps, so I'll stick to my reloads and/or Rems.

Yes. I had that issue with some 25-06 hornady "custom" rounds a few years ago. Primer strikes but no powder in the shell. I still have 2 of the rounds. I still can't believe they have these get through their QA/QC.

Makes you wonder if an entire casing misses a load, how accurate are the remainder.

As far as calling them, I'm sure they'd want to know but what can they do? Give me a free round? Lol.

Interesting this came up. My 270 has always loved the 130gr Sst Custom that hornady makes, it shoots under 1" day in day out, but they have discontinued it so I bought what was supposed to "replace it", the 130 SST Superformance Load. This load SUCKS. 2" groups in a rifle that I dont recall ever shooting over 1". Ticks me off. I have looked everywhere in stores and online and nobody has the regular custom load. Looks like I'll be loading some 270s now along with everything else. Ridiculous.

Interesting to see these many issues with that specific round as well. I have shot probably 3 or 4 boxes of the stuff over the last 4 years and my model 70 .270 loves em. Will print under an inch if I do my part and is devastating on game. Recently got my sister a rem 700 in .243 and hers liked the hornady whitetail 100gr loads best out of 3 different brands of ammo. Winchester, remingtons, hornadies, and fiochi if I remember right, put 3 boxes of hornadies through that gun since August and nary a problem.

I have shot Honady for several years with no issues until this year. I bought 2 boxes of the super performance in 7mm Rem Mag and could only chamber 6 out of 40 rounds. Did some checking and the case right at the belt is too large. We mic'd the cases and they are all out of tollerances. Some of the cases were so tight I was afraid the bolt was going to break off.
I grabbed 2 more boxes of Federal Pemium and Remington and had no problem chambering in the same gun.

I dont doubt Hornady will make it right, but it was really a pain in the rear when I was trying to get ready for a big hunt.

I had issues with some Hornady 243 58gr Vax. I had 11rds left out of the box I was having trouble with. I gave Hornady a call and they sent out a UPS driver to pick up the partial box so they could inspect the ammo. After it was all said and done Hornady sent me 100rds of 243. Wasn't out a dime on anything. They will definitely make it right.

No. And contrary to what others have said, Superformance has shot very well in many of my rifles. I easily shoot sub-moa with Superformance SST in my 243, 270, 308 and two of my 7mm Rem mags. I have shot a variety of Hornady ammunition/bullets over the years and they have been very accurate and the bullets have always performed as designed.
Overall, I think Hornady makes some of the most consistent factory loads and the best hunting bullets.

Hornady has never disappointed me.

Had great luck with the SST's in the Hornady Light Magnum round in .308.
The superformance though would not shoot consistently in my .308 or 7mm-08.
Switched to the Barnes Vortex TTSX and have not looked back.
Can't find the light Magnum rounds anymore.

Been having some inconsistencies with factory loaded ssts for 6.8. Not sure what is going on but I've shot many hogs before in the head / neck and usually DRT... now I hit them in the same spot and they take off running. I've checked my gun many times at the range as well.

Guess it's time to start reloading.

I know this is a hornady thread, but it happened to me with federal sierra game kings with my 25.06. The dreaded click, pause, then all of a sudden, boom. gun goes off. luckily i was still on a buck when it happened and i still got him. the next week it happened again and it caused me to miss a hog. i contacted federal and they blamed my gun. over and over and over again. could not get them to admit that maybe 2 out the 20 was defective. they absolutely would not admit fault. anhyone else had this happen with federal bullets or customer service? sorry to hijack the thread.

I had an issue last fall with a box of 25-06 SST's. They all fired, but the group was all over the place, which has never happened since I switched to the SST a few years ago. I finished that box, opened a new one and my groups were back to the normal tight group that I typically get.
