Default Headed to Nannie Stringfellow for Gun Deer this weekend.

My son was drawn and itís time! We are bringing corn, atv, feeder, thermocells, etc. Any idea if they have been seeing deer or any tips to draw the bucks in? When is the rut in this area? Thanks in advance.

It's towards the tail end of it now. I live about 10 miles from the refuge. It is wet and the skeeters are as bad as I've ever seen around here. And it's continuing to rain. Ive had 3" the last two days, 15" a couple weeks ago, and plenty more in the forecast. Acorns have just started to fall also. I wouldn't waste my time with corn unless you're wanting hogs. If you need anything let me know. I drive by the refuge on my way home from work every day.

Hunted there a couple years ago. You will need the ATV especially with all the rain. We even had parts of our compartment that our ATV couldn't handle. My main advice would be.... don't pass on hogs especially with a youth hunter. That place is covered up in them and your kiddo should have plenty of targets. Saw alot more hogs than deer on our hunt.

Should be a fun hunt but prepare for them skeeters, they are god awful. Great staff, that guy Ernest is a really friendly guy. The mud should make the ATV ride fun for the kiddo. Good luck!

DO NOT go without carrying a set of rattling antlers and use them.. Use them a lot.. Bring a grunt call also..
Rattling is very affective in this area this time of year.. IMO it is your best bet at bagging a good one..

A man bring plenty of mosquito spray.. They are the worst I've seen in years..

Most of the area is probably going to be several inches deep in water because of all the rain. It won't affect the hunting that much, but be sure to wear rubber boots. Also, don't be afraid to sit in the blind all day through the pouring rain. My boys have all shot deer there when the weather was nasty.
For the youth hunts, they will often team up with the San Bernard NWR to provide more blinds for the hunt. It's just down the road. You are not allowed to bait on the NWR but don't worry if your son draws one over there. There are tons of deer over there too and all of my boys have gotten lucky hunting over there even with no bait.
They really do try to make it fun for the kids and help them be successful. Your son is going to have a great time! Good luck!

I've used several different brands.. It really doesn't matter as long as it gives a good, deep, guttural grunt..

There is probably a video or 2 on YouTube that might give you some direction..

My daughter was drawn there last year and killed a big spike and shot 5 pigs. Pigs everywhere, we had to shoot them to get them to leave the corn. Most deer were killed at the blinds to the East of the check station, none from across the street on the hunt we were on.

Tell her sorry about the miss. It happens to everyone, even though some won't admit it. I hope she still had fun. Did you cut off her shirt tail like the old tradition requires?
