Default Road side bucks with heads cut off

Maybe people are cutting the heads off of very large bodied does and I shouldn't ask

But I noticed a few heads cut off bucks that were hit by cars on the side of the road. Why? What do people do with them?

I know it's not legal. I just can't imagine stopping and trying to cut a bucks head off on side of the road LOL But it appears to be done a lot.

It's fairly easy as long as your knife is sharp. Cut hide and meat down to bone then twist off. Takes less than 2 minutes. I mean, I'd imagine it was that fast...

Its game wardens or the regional wildlife biologist, they do it for testing for CWD.

GWs like to hang them in their garages after using them for entrapment. :-)

The deer I saw had orange flagging tied to it and head cut off. Every deer in Lamar co I saw dead on side of road last week. Assumed it was TPW.

Probably getting them mounted and making up a great story as to how they killed them! I saw a few roadkills in Wisconsin a couple of weeks ago missing their heads.

Same thread every year. Other posters are correct. It's GW's testing for CWD.... for the most part anyway, as I'm sure there are those who will stop n get horns from a big enuf buck. It's like crack for some folks!

I'm guessin selling them. There's a market for horns so probably. Normally I just see road killed deer disappear completely. And it ain't coyotes eatin them. I've seen a fresh hit deer get picked up in less than 30 minutes.

One would think a GW would dispose of the deer instead of taking just the head...IMO

Game Wardens do it for two reasons.

1. CWD testing

2, Keep people from doing it just to have the antlers.

Or if one pops up positive, it could have a number on the tag and can be traced back to where it came from.

The CWD testing makes a lot of sense. Free test subject.

How long does it take to get the test back? You'd think if GWs were doing it on fresh kills, and the tests were neg., they could also be charged with wasting game meat by not taking the whole thing?

They always now test deer on tpw draw hunts, they gave us the CWD test # at some of them others you have to ask, it was months before the test results were posted here https://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/wild.../test-results/ If they absolutely know its a fresh kill they will have it donated to hunters for the hungry or a local food bank, otherwise they aren't going to chance for spoiled meat, other states have roadkill carcass tags. It doesn't matter if test is CWD positive or negative the meat is still safe to eat.

I saw a guy just outside of Lampasas going to town on a buck hit by a car with a hacksaw in the middle of the day one time. I laughed my butt off as I was driving by. It was a little Ol 6pt if I remember right. I don’t get people sometimes.

People could get the antlers for all sorts of things such as knife handles etc. nothing wrong with picking up a useful material. I doubt people would haul them around and act like they killed it. But then again, there’s some shallow people in the world

I never fill my tags. I have never killed more than one buck in a year and I hunt in a three buck county.

I would 100% cut a monster bucks head and burn a tag for it.

Game wardens will cut head off at the back of the skull on bucks... the two reasons I have been told are to stop people from picking em up and also utilize for studies (aging and stuff) and counts on deer hit on roadways

Did I read this wrong or are you suggesting a GW be charged with wasting game meat if they left the carcass on something they didnít kill because their job requires them to test roadkill samples on the side of the road?

Wait what?????

Weíre talking about a deer killed on the side of the road by a vehicle. Game Wardens are testing them for CWD. You think they should write themselves a ticket for wasting game?

We don’t take the heads. But when it’s between 30-40 degrees we drive the back roads and spray paint a circle around the deer. Then in the morning we drive back and every without a circle is fresh and we take it. Just kidding.

I did notice driving back from Oklahoma yesterday lots of heads were cut off In texas. I assumed it was people wanting the horns but I guess it could be CWD testing

I know some of them are done by game biologist, they want a brain tissue sample, for CWD. I thought the samples were being taken by game wardens, in some areas it may be game wardens.

There was a dead buck along the road, near our place. My wife saw some guy cutting up the deer. I went to check, to see who, it was a game biologist.

The biologist doing CWD testing are taking the lymph nodes from the throat. Normally, removing the head will mess this up but maybe the GWs have been trained to do it correctly.
