Default Sonís Ď83 Chevy Project

So last May, my son decided he didnít want to drive the Ď97 Explorer I have in the driveway. Like all 14 year old youngíuns from Texas, he wanted a truck. Since kids were out of school due to Covid. He started a business in the garage building torch burned flags. Kid busted his arse all summer and by August heíd earned enough to buy his first truck.
Tx_Hoghunter had an 83 Chevy in the classifieds so we went and looked at it and came home with it and he named her Dixie.

The project has been slow due to schedules, but so far weíve put a new fusable link, new power steering pump and new radiator.

This weekend, we replaced the rotors and pads on the front (stil have to replace the drums and guts on the back brakes) and he started gutting the cab for the new headliner and carpet heís ordered and has sitting in his bedroom. To save money, heís only replacing the broken trim pieces. Heíll reuse the good pieces and paint it all to match. Still have to order the door panels and either find a bench seat or covers for the existing seats.

Here are some pics, Iíll try to keep this updated.

Hell yeah!

Not crapping on the Explorer but that’s a way better first ride for a teenager any day! Love the pics of him out working on it as well!

Seats, headliner, and trim are out. At a standstill until I get him some TSP to start cleaning the trim to prep for paint.

I can't tell from the pictures, but if he is not using jack stands, make sure he does. Once is all it takes.

Dualed out with Glass packs right?

I picked up an 81 C20 that me and my sons are working on (7 & 11). I told them about my dads old ford that had glass packs, and now that is all they talk about. Dad....do they make glass packs for go karts? LOL

Good times.

Manchild had a baseball game this morning. He got home and got busy while I was at work.
Headliner and upper trim is in. Looks so much better and he did good work. Hopefully we can get the floor cleaned and carpet in this weekend between games. Have to order more paint for the lower trim and sun visors, a new LED dome light, and new door strikers. Also gonna try to pick up a new steering wheel from Summit Racing this weekend too.

Baseball games and workouts have kept him busy the last couple days. The power windows were slower than heck. Probably needs new motors and regulators, but I saw on YouTube to clean the tracks and spray with silicone. I did that and they are working much better now.

Joe got the rear wall carpet in today. Hopefully get the carpet in for at least a dry fit tomorrow.

I had a 76 in high school. Loved that truck. One of my parental figures sold it out from under me when I was in the Marines.

He turns 16 next month so heís motivated to get the things he wanted done completed. Still have to order the door panels for the interior and get the back brakes done. He wants/needs a paint job, but thatís going to have to wait for a bit. For now we may just buff it out and see what it looks like.
