Default What the Heck?

This is nuts----but it isn't in Texas though a friend said he'd seen some odd charges on fast food bills lately.

Wouldn't it be better for business to just get new menus with higher prices and not throw this out in all your customer's faces?

Negative. I want to know what I'm paying for. In this instance, if i find out I'm paying an "equity tax" that place will be off my list.

I found this pretty shocking until I noticed this restaurant is in Minneapolis. They've lost their mind!

This practice has been going on for some time and yes, there are restaurants in Texas doing it -remember the Covid fee?? Not any different in my opinion.

As a restaurant operator I cannot find one reason to justify this. I struggle with the amount of tips jars that have popped up during COVID. I asked my employees a couple of weeks ago if they knew what tips stands for. I did not have any shifts for three days that everyone knew. For those of you who also do not know, it stands for To Insure Proper Service. I seldom get whatever 5 years ago would have been considered “proper service”. I am a good tipper, often leaning on the high end. Race or gender has never come into my evaluation of this amount. I would find it insulting if a business stated they needed to help me make a good decision here. It will not happen where I work,I can insure you of that.

I need to start paying closer attention to my bill. The day I find that I’m being charged for the color of my skin or to boost someone’s cost of living wage, because the restaurant owner is too much of a tightwad, it’s going to be an embarrassing day for that owner/manager.

I think that from now on Iíll be calling first and letting them have it over the phone and on their reviews!

I agree. If I am not informed of it BEFORE I order my food and they try to hijack me afterwards it gets deducted as well as ZERO tip and I won't be going back.

How about we just do away with tipping and pay servers a normal wage? I'm tired of subsidizing someone else's labor costs through tipping...I'd rather pay a little more for the food and do away with the practice as a whole

"telling your customers you are going to charge them more because they are too bigoted to tip fairly might not be a winning restaurant strategy. Just sayin’."

I suppose some customers will support the policy or just shrug and pay it. I would hope however there will be a huge backlash and the business suffers.

Businesses in Texas won't be doing this for long before they stop or shut down due to lack of customers

No, because a 15% across the board increase would price them out of the market and be viewed as greedy. Label it an ďequity feeĒ and you get PR mileage out of it, virtue signaling and thus attract others who wish to virtue signal.

Id be really intrigued to see how this is distributed across staffing, how much ownership/management take off the top. More in depth, is it distributed equally across staff or based on race/gender? How can they legally compensate differently based on that?

What incentive do you have to do your job properly?...

Pay them a normal wage and if they do poorly get rid of them.

The restaurant owner is just being a good liberal. They are always willing to give someone the shirt off of someone else’s back.

That is a big no for me!! And if I find out they are making $16 per hour then no tip. Sorry but I'm not paying for them to double dip and it is either one or the other. My son making $10 an hour working for an electrician doesn't get tips...nor should he...

If I get half way decent service, I usually give em close to 20%. If I find this, they just got a 5% reduced tip.

If I have had poor service, I will literally put 2 cents on the tip. Why? So they know I didnít forget.

In a wonderful world, I would sit down to dinner with a stack of cash, explain to the server ďthis is your tipĒ if we have fantastic service. If our drinks get low, food order is wrong, food cold etc, I start putting bills from the stack back in my pocket

This right here. If they add this to my bill they will only get the rest of the percentage I was going to tip anyway and I will not be back. Where it sucks is that as mentioned they probably donít see the whole amount. If the restaurant staff know this they should fight against it. Especially the ones that do a good job and are regularly get tipped well. The rest will love it and continue to do their job poorly and may do even less.
