Favorite Youth Caliber - Deer and Pigs
Favorite overall caliber for older youth: 7mm08
Best overall caliber for wide range of youth (youngest to oldest): 243
For that age, Id go with a 223 and a good bullet and keep the shots at less than 100 yards (yes, I know, it can kill farther, but with age and the caliber combined, why not keep them closer).
Keep in mind, if you get a compact/youth sized rifle, it will typically be lighter and the recoil could be greater than normal.
I’ve had good success with my kids with a Ruger american compact 243 and a savage axis 223 compact. The kids were ringing steel with the 223 at 200 yards and my nephew shot a doe with the 223 the next day at about 60 yards.

my boys have a 7mm08 and a 6.5c, both are great for kids. they only shoot 223 or 22 at the range and only shoot their rifle when its time to kill. i think that helps them not be scared of the recoil, especially when they are smaller.
when they shoot at an animal they never feel the recoil or even hear the shot lol.
