Texas was able to sign a RHP out of the 2020 class that is a stud. Only problem for Texas is he will probably never throw a pitch at the college level. He is out of Refurigio. Kid named Kelley. He sits upper 90s off the bump

I have seen video. Very little chance he ever gets on a college mound. He is destined for bigger things if he stays healthy.

My kid has played against Kelley during the tourneys and he is good. Very good mound presence and probably the best pitcher I have seen come out in years. Chances that he throws a baseball wearing burnt orange is slim at best.
He sits the #1 high school prospect coming out in 2020 for the Nation. That means he will be a top 2-3 pick and maybe #1 overall. So for him to throw at the college level he would have to turn down $6 million to $12 million.

I hope the A&M bats are more consistent this year. Hopefully, Caillet has addressed some of our issues from last year.

Just bought tickets for the Friday game vs TCU in Austin in May. We'll go to the Sat game too, but will get GA for that one and hang out in #LF. This is my son's birthday trip, he'll be wound up!

HS RHP generally doesn't go #1-#3.

But the kid is really good.

Got an alert on my phone that Robin Ventura is returning to the Oklahoma State staff as a "Student Assistant".

I saw that on Twitter. I believe he is finishing his degree and will assist the ball team while he is there.

Wonder if his first words of advice to hitters will be if they get plunked in the back to just take the base and let it go?

Not too excited. All Texas men's programs have been sucking. I have more faith in baseball obviously but not hearing much reason for optimism this year.

Possibly three true freshman on the infield and one in the weekend rotation does not bode well for this year.

True. Unfortunately for him it hasn't held up. Out for the season again in 2020. I feel bad for him. He's a very hard worker and was a great kid.

This is why teams shy away from HS RHP that high in the draft. As there isn't enough track record to support the risk.

Ginn is one off the top of my head.. im sure googler would produce a list of them.
If i remember right.. appel was another .. cant remember if van popple was a righty or not..believe he was.. side note: his son is supposed to be a stud
There are plenty..but some how i think you knew that.. just didnt fit your storyline.

Ginn was the #30 pick, and ultimately didn't sign out of HS. Under 6' as well. He is soph eligible so we shall see what this year holds for him. FB sits 92/93, not the high 90's.

Van Poppel was #14.

Appel was drafted in the 15th round out of HS.

There aren't plenty of HS RHP's drafted in the top 3 picks, or top 5 for that matter, as my original post mentioned.

Hunter Greene in 2017, Ian Anderson and Riley Pint in 2016, Tyler Kolek in 2014, Kohl Stewart in 2013, Bundy in 2011.

These were top 5. It isn’t as rare as it once was.

Well done!

Except for Bundy (who was drafted last year before slot values were placed on picks), any of those guys proving their draft value?

I'll give you some grace period with Greene.

Anderson was up last year with the Braves at some point but canít remember how he did. He and Pint are still pretty young. Tyler Kolek is a complete bust so far. I think the Twins got some bullpen innings out of Stewart last year.

Would you agree, not really what you are looking for with a top 5 pick?

In other words, my point in why HS RHP is considered high risk that high in the draft. The track record continues to prove it.

I would certainly hope if I were drafting in the top 5 that there would be enough talent that a high school RHP wasn't in the top 5 on my board. But, with all the showcases and the statcast data, I think scouting of high school pitchers is not nearly the crap shoot it was even 10 years ago.

The player we were talking about, Jared Kelley, is not a prototypical 6'5" dude, so I doubt that he goes top 5 even without knowing anything about the talent in this year's draft. But, he is certainly good enough to get top 15 money somewhere in the draft and not sign with Texas. BA has him at 6th overall and the top high school player in the country.
