I don't remember how long ago it was (2-3 years maybe?) but the league was definitely worried about sign stealing via new electronic/video technology. They put out a statement to all teams that high tech cheating would be dealt with harshly. Sign stealing the old fashion way - by runners on base - is still just considered part of the game.

If you can steal and distinguish the sign with your eyes at 100+’ and signal the batter who’s locked on pitch about to have ball thrown +\- 100mph in the next 2 seconds... I got no problem with it

The major issue is that someone with the Astros deliberately went out of their way to intentionally setup a live feed camera to always 100% of the time see the sign given by the catcher and that live feed was sent to a monitor in the hallway dugout and an Astros person would audibly send a signal by banging on a trashcan to relay what pitch was coming to the Astros batter.

My question is who decides placement of the cameras? Who though a camera directly facing home zoomed in so much you can see the catchers hand was a good idea?

What’s that old adage if ya ain’t cheating ya ain’t trying? Lol. That’s pro sports for ya I guess. Smh

That was 2017 when NY and Boston were both caught using technology to cheat. Apparently it only was worthy of a slap on the wrist then because of said parties. Now it is like someone beat up someone's Grandma.

Oh well, I always have said if you are going to break the rules or the law be prepared to pay the consequences. The Astros are paying big time for their indiscretion.

It wasn’t a network camera feed.
It was a separate live feed camera setup just to cheat.

Do you think Nolan bolted when he found out about it or because he realized the scheme was about to be exposed?

Ahhhhhh that makes more sense. Although I did see some network cameras that were showing the same thing. Then after the accusations came that view went away.

Didn't they demote his son in favor of the owner's son? I thought that was why he left.

That isn't true. They used the replay camera feed that is in every stadium. Still shouldn't have done it, but they did not set up their own camera.

Maybe they kept the receipt?

And from my understanding it was impossible for them to do it in 2019. MLB implemented a 10 second delay on the live feed to the clubhouse with the lone exception the replay monitor which was being "monitored" by an MLB official.

They demoted Reid for not handling another ugly situation with the press properly. Hopefully this is the last of ugliness that is the Luhnow/Hinch legacy. They may be smart, insightful, progressive, etc but they let the level of arrogance within the organization reach stupid levels. Ive been around it before and it always ends the same.

I am an Astros fan 1st and am mad that they cheated and the punishments and eventual firings are just but here are where my issues lie...

The camera in question was a camera for scouting that was approved by MLB and already in place and not a special camera installed and hidden for illegal purposes....live feed has to be requested and approved also.
That being said, although it was already there and supposed permission granted. It was used illegally

The part that rubs me wrong the most that during this huge investigation, one of the folks that came forward was former player Logan Morrison. He came forward with 1st hand knowledge that it (electronic sign stealing) has been going on by at least 8 teams including the Dodgers and Yankees since 2014.....

But that is ignored

The good news is that this was an isolated incident and not a single other team is guilty of it. Certainly doesn't make it right, but if you think your team isn't cheating, you're pretty naive.

Who are the rumors for the new manager? This should end up being an upgrade, in that regard.

AJ Hinch was an average to garbage manager, yall.

Joe Espada, the current bench coach, is likely to have the interim manager tag for the season. He is well respected around the league and there likely isn't a huge drop off. He got several interviews for managerial openings this offseason. I wouldn't be surprised if they took the interim tag off him at some point this season.

I think you are wrong on AJ. If he was a poor manager, he wouldn't have been able to win a World Series when his whole bullpen imploded.

But, baseball manager is probably the most over rated job in the major sports. They certainly don't have the effect on the game that a football or basketball head coach does.

Losing Luhnow is a much bigger problem. The Astros front office has been raided by other clubs in the last few years, so the strength under him is not what it was a few years before. And, the challenges in finding a 4th and 5th starter plus rebuilding the bullpen with very little money to work with under the second luxury tax threshold all while needing to rebuild the farm system that has had most of its depth traded away or graduated and no 1st or 2nd round picks for two year is a really big job.

Pete Putila was promoted to Luhnow's second in command this offseason and he will probably get the interim GM tag. They aren't going to be able to rebuild the front office with a month to go before pitchers and catchers report. I wouldn't be surprised if they cleaned out the front office next offseason and went with a new guy. The problem with that will be that the Astros scouting system is different than every other team in the league. It will be interesting to see how they meld that with a new GM.

I think it’s BS. Everybody in the MLB steals signs. And you can’t tell my that everybody in that front office didn’t know what was going on. They didn’t care when they were winning but when it got out all the sudden they were offended by it.
