Well, I guess all speculation & opinions at this point. I have never seen "greater" penalties being given to those drivers that wrecked with Hamilton in the past.....or vice versa. Or anybody else from what I can put my finger on. Maybe back when Sena, Andretti and Schumacher were at eachothers throat . Fans or so-called fans have dug in and be danged if they are willing to truly look at the entire scenario when any driver wrecks a car into another driver. 90% of us can't even manage a vehicle above 90 or 100 miles per hour.......let alone upwards of 220. It is truly a dicey call either way.......I accepted the 10 seconds and was shocked to see him even on the podium.

I read about that also. Just because practice rounds showed him using a different line has nothing to deaux with raceday!!! These teams lie all day on the radio communication to throw off opposing pit crews. He shook it up on raceday......nothing wrong with that.

I think the guys point was the stewards are penalizing infractions vs incidents...more like football. So his position was that he felt like someone was getting a penalty no matter what. If we had all of the same lead up to Copse and luck fell on Max's side and Lewis wrecked (bc that part was just blind luck) he felt Max would have gotten dinged because the same argument can be made toward Max i.e. he took the line, didn't lift, and "caused" a wreck. What I don't understand is the "he took him out" people....Lewis had absolutely no way to know he wouldn't have been the one in the gravel, it was pure luck....and some great aggressive racing. I wish Max would have lifted only because we could have had a whole race that way which would have been outstanding. Hell, I'm a Gasly fan anyway haha.

I'm a huge Gasly fan also. He is gonna be special!!!
Yes, I have to agree....someone was gonna get a penalty. Yes, this non sense that Hamilton took him out was squashed by a bunch of retired F1 drivers as that could have been totally opposite outcome. I would tend to think anyone truly following F1 knows that.

If the wreck is settled, can someone explain to me what keeps Haas going?

Coming from Nascar I find it odd that any one team seems to always be that far behind the rest of the field.
All the parts seem to be there, team seems to function, drivers drive- yet it's as if they are down a hundred ponies or something.
Are they new to the game and just in the cutting their teeth stage?

They are under funded relative to the more comparative teams and quite new. Their first year was 2017 maybe? They also have a very different approach to F1 where they buy “off the shelf” components more so than developing components internally which is designed to keep their spend down. I’m not sure what the secret sauce is, but they haven’t found it yet. I think I read somewhere their total budget was $65million for the season, Lewis Hamilton is projected to make $62 mil this year and that’s almost nothing from endorsements. It’s really kind of nuts. Max’s car is $750k to repair….makes you wonder how much Haas spends on repairs alone

I’ve always wondered this too… just like Williams.. how do the come up with the funds to “compete”

What happens to Williams when Russell moves on?

Excellent info, new in 2017 says a lot.

From what I gleaned from the Drive to Survive Netflix show- Williams has been around for a while. (Daughter took over after father retired or something to that effect)

Watching them flail about week after week is kinda sad. I give her /them props for trying, but hoping for a mid pack finish has got to be frustrating- for all involved.

LOL guess the netflix show has a bunch of newbies to F!, HAAS used to be very competitive when they first started up a few years back, Williams was "THE" team back in the early 90's. With the speed of development in F1 a team can go from the top to the back and vice versa in a matter of seasons. Current Mercedes team used to be Honda back in 2008 and sucked, then changed to Brawn and won the championship the next year and then became the Mercedes works team in 2010

Haas started in F1 in 2016. They are in really poor form this year due to not updating their car for the 2021 season, and focusing on the 2022 car instead. Also, two rookies in the seats this year has a lot to do with it.

There is so much that goes into the cars, it’s difficult to point to2-3 areas that are “at fault.” It all starts with the designers and engineers. The top talent is usually at the better teams because they can pay more. But they also look at how much “freedom” the team is willing to give them. Take Adrian Newey for example. He was with Williams in the winning years in the early nineties. Went to Red Bull in 2006 for a “new challenge” and really liked the culture they had there. Built the RB car to become a championship winning machine in a couple of years.

The driver has to be good at driving, but also has to be really good at communicating with his engineers what’s going on with the car throughout a lap. That’s how the car / driver / team improve through a weekend, throughout a season.

During a race, how good is your tire strategy? How good is the team at pit stops? How reliable is the car throughout a race weekend?

In Formula 1, the driver is 20% of the equation, the car is the other 80%. Compared to motorcycle racing, say MotoGP — the rider is 80% and the bike is 20% of the formula.

There are SO many factors, and they are always changing. The FIA changes the regulations every year. Many years aren’t major changes, but minor suspension or aero requirements.

I love this sport. It is never boring to me at all.

or motocross or desert racing where I would say its 90-95% driver. Nascar and Indycar are spec series now so its more driver than car than is used to be but probably 50/50, then you have SRX which is basically new IROC, the idea there its all driver.

I agree. The car makes the drivers job easier but the driver’s skill is getting 100% out of the car under various setups. To me it’s more like they are one single entity and the more cohesive they are the better the outcomes will be.

Paddy Lowe has a good interview in Beyond the Grid talking about the car vs driver. He points out that while Lewis is 100% a special, wicked talented driver he also has been the heir of immense fortune in the fact that Mercedes has had the best car in the turbo era hands down. He also talks about the fact the Lewis hasn’t had many true rivals with comparable cars (but some with what he thought could be comparable talent) forcing the tighter points race….until recently with the obvious exception being Nico in 2016.

Still know dates for Miami but supposedly the track has moved forward decently since I was there in May.......and it was literally NOTHING worth looking at.

Don't forget that Hamilton was largely dominant before the era changed to hybrid and before he was with Mercedes.
I saw where Christian Horner announced that the price tag on Max's car would be $1.8 million pounds..........ouch! Oh, the pic you posted of the Redbull is shocking. Is that actually the right car?

It’s definitely the right car. That crash was brutal. I didn’t realize Perez’s crash was 60+ G’s. Crazy! Hamilton’s biggest claim to fame to me is winning I think 9 races his debut season. Absolutely insane. Paddy’s reference was more to the fact that he hasn’t had a persistent rival all these years going pound for pound.

If you would, PM me your contact for Miami. It seems to be a little bit of a cluster.

This is the last rep that contacted me about my Miami deposit. I have not set up my timeframe to discuss current status but I will deaux it next week......actually, thank you for the reminder!

Oscar,

I wanted to introduce myself to you as I'll be working with you as we begin to finalize your hospitality for the 2022 F1 Miami Grand Prix.

Over the next few weeks, I'd like to find some time on your calendar to walk you through a brief overview of the types of hospitality options we'll have available & our timeline. While pricing and benefits/amenities are not 100% finalized yet, this call will give you a very good overview and prepare you for when we go on sale in the September/October time frame. Use the link below to schedule a time for us to connect in the coming days/weeks.

Whew!!! That is car is freaking FUGLY!
Yes, that seems correct as that rookie season was AMAZING by all standards. The other teams have not nailed it like Mercedes in the hybrid era to be brutally honest, that got left in the proverbial fumes. Also, we cant blame Hamilton for falling to the right team at the right moment in F1 history, right?

Absolutely not! Hamilton to my knowledge has always been very gracious towards Mercedes bc even when he was at McClaren he ran a Mercedes power plant. If anything he played the cards perfectly! Paddy’s point was there was just no other cars that were close to competing with them but he at least felt there were drivers who, given the right ride, could have. I think the best was the Nico/Lewis rivalry.

Yessir, I concur! The changes for 2022 are truly going to tell a huuuuge story about each team. As noted earlier, some teams made zero changes in 2021 and betting it all on 2022 and 2023.

Was listening to Jost talk about the new car vs this year and he said Williams is putting nothing into the 21 car and was very blunt about expecting not to be competitive for the rest of the year and Russel.

I gotta believe it will be completely different next year. Actually think Hamilton is hanging around just to prove he is the dominant driver pre-hybrid, hybrid and whatever next year brings. That guy could walk away and be in movies tomorrow or whatever else he has a interest in.

52G crash? pffft, I was there the 214G crash at TMS, I think it still holds as the world record for highest recorded G load survived, not a title you want.

Looked at the Formula E Grand Prix this morning from London. Wow....pleasantly surprised and YES......the future is here. Those cars were getting it on and the drivers were super aggressive. The usual suspects (manufacturers) had teams. But 1st place went to Mahindra......heck, I thought all they did was tractors. Mercedes was 2nd. I need to see how much of this technology is making its way into F1 or better yet the consumer markets.

I watched this. Wish it had been a longer track to get a good idea of speed.
Then I thought of the 2 guys that died in The Woodlands in that Tesla and the battery fire that took 2 hours to put out!

I’m not convinced you can get the weight and energy density corrected to really have the same experience with FE that you get with F1….and sound is obviously part of that. Those battery fires are crazy to watch too, count me out. I want noise, gates of hell screaming at 15k rpm noise.

Alright alright alright, silver Eagle front row followed by team bovine. This should make for some interesting mid race battles. Anyone catch the tomfoolery in Q3? These teams, not just drivers, all have sharp elbows and I’m hoping for some aggressive racing!

Did I some some extra slow time for a certain Mercedes leaving pit lane that caused Perez not to beat the clock out for his last attempt?

There were defiantly some tactics at play in free practice and quali. Verstappen pulling out in from of Lewis in FP3 I think it was and then Lewis’ slow pace in Q3. I didn’t watch all of it but seems the games are in fell effect for the two teams.

Both drivers seem equally frustrated which is interesting. Verstappen is know to be a hot head sometimes but Lewis very rarely gets upset or shaken in interviews. Historically he’s been really good at getting in the heads of competitors.

Verstappen took his third motor after Q3 which means he’s got to go the balance of the season on this one.

Awesome for Ocon, good to see the spirit between him and Alonso. I think Alonso earned that driver of the day holding off Hamilton.

That turn one crash was pretty crazy. Hate it for Leclerc.

I only saw the last 17 laps but it was incredible. I read about the wreck but have not seen it yet.

Bottas takes 5 place grid penalty for the lap 1 wreck.

Huge win for Alpine! Great to see the two drivers celebrating. Williams takes their first points and Red Bull has to be so completely frustrated. My boy Gasley did well and grabbed the fastest lap so good on him, Tsunoda also had a very solid race.

I turned on the tube & missed the beginning...they were in the pits waiting for the rain to pass and/or crash clean up. Decided to take the dogs for a walk & will watch the replay this evening.

Hell of a race today. As one who cheers for Ferrari, it was a bad go for Leclerc to start the race. Lance Stroll caused that portion of the crash acting like he was driving a monster truck.

Bottas with a mistake that will cost him and shouldn’t have happened.

All in all, awesome race with action all the way through. When Hamilton had the mess up starting on wet tires while the rest of the grid pitted, I thought he was done for but there’s a reason he’s the best. Still came back and took podium. Unreal.

No doubt he covered for a very stupid team mistake. I laughed out loud when he was on the radio bitching about Alonso on lap 63-65 when they were in the thick of it. I mean it’s pretty rich him saying Alonso driving defensively on a straight was overly dangerous. Even Niko had to chuckle about it. He’s dang fast though, best for a reason.

Oh crap!!! Bottas got a 5 grid penalty for Belgium??.. I read Stroll was dragging butt when everyone else was pedal to the medal. Yes, I was happy to see Gasly run a decent race and snatch that fastest lap.
Hamilton was in beast mode to even sniff a podium after that bad decision to stay on wets. My wife just read he is being treated for dizziness and exhaustion.......ot was obvious on the podium that he was not really himself. I was waiting for him to hurl on someone. G forces ain't no joke!!!

Also, vettel's 2nd place may not hold due to not submitting an adequate fuel sample post race. Name: Screenshot_20210801-145645_Google.jpg

Ouch… so does that put Sainz on the podium? Or do they leave the space vacant?

Scarlett horse gets the podium. Sainz was on Instagram popping a bottle of champagne at dinner (unless it was an old picture for effect). Either way, P3 goes to him unless Vettel and Aston Martin’s appeal goes through. Read that the technical guru for AM said there was 1.4L left, F1 requires a 1 liter sample, and they were only able to pull .3L upon the finish. I guess that’s why he killed the car in the track.

Stroll given 5 grid penalty as well.

Some of you guys who have been watching F1 longer, what is the justification for such a steep penalty for the Bottas wreck and how is this more severe than Silverstone based on FIA rules? I would think Rain and poor visibility on a start would be a natural place for this kind of thing to happen….it’s kind of chaos to begin with.

I guess that lightens my cringe when I watched Lewis blow his socks off with one to go lol

Must end the race with fuel in the tank for a sample?
Interesting, I guess there is no coasting over the finish line in this sport.

I guess sampling fuel in the pits/jugs isn't what they do in F1.
OK, still learning......
