    My father used to drop calcium carbide pellets down the hole, then step on the hole to seal it. I think the flammable gas created kills them.

      We call them "coffin cutter" crawfish. Usually blue or gray in color.......non edible and those mounds were on every bayou, ditch and pond for a 100 miles. No one that we knew even tried to get rid of them honestly........until the lawnmower whacked them!
