Wife and I got into a discussion about "average." I feel like calling someone average is saying subpart. What's your take?

If we say someone is "average" in my career, you can adequately and effectively do your job. You can be trusted to do the job with little or minimal supervision. We call average people a denominator and I don't say that to be demeaning. Some people just want to do their job, earn a paycheck, and go home and that is okay. Some people want to be the top guy/#1, aka a numerator.

I think, in most contexts, “average” would mean mediocre, ordinary, usual, unexceptional, etc. I suppose it’s the way I was raised, but, in my world, mediocrity is to be avoided at all costs. No exceptions, no excuses.
I’m still working on it. |

I guess I don't understand the question. Average is the same as ordinary. Is that what you're asking? Are we trying to think of synonyms for the word average?
Average is......pretty much every person I know. Which makes sense because they're.....your average people. Last edited by okrattler; 02-26-2021 at 09:56 PM. |

To me, average means not exceptional. Not like median where half are above and half are below.

However, an average person in a gifted/talented collection of people can be quite different than an average person in a collection of average people . .

Are either of you two reading that dumb butt book about average where the author began with the story about the fighter cockpit? Depends on what particular you are comparing.

Average is not a negative term - for example - “ i like average size knockers”. Not saying anything wrong with below average or well above average - like them all just prefer average

My favorite “average” quote is “take the average dumbarse you know. Now realize that half the dumbarses are dumber than that.”

Average is relative like time. The final 2 mins of a basketball game is eternity. That last 2 mins of your life is a flash. Average in certain context is well and good, in others it is abysmal

I stayed in a motel in Saltillo Mx once that had gargantuan doors. Average knockers on them would look out of place.

X2 hpdrifter, your post makes a lot of sense.
For myself there are Lots of areas I’d take “average” in, like Olympic recurve competitors, USPSA 3-Gun champions, NBA starting Point Guards, NASCAR drivers, etc., etc. I believe the “group” must be defined before being “average” in it has any meaning. |

If you understand/comprehend the meaning of average...then this thread and most of the responses baffles me.
Disclaimer...I’m easily baffled |

It’s getting tougher. If you’re “1 in a million”, there are 7800 just like you in the world today. Above average? Yes? But who wants 7800 people just like them?

Average is like having one foot in a bucket of scalding hot water and the other foot is in freezing ice water; the average temperature is comfortable.
The term, “average” can be misleading...or even subpart if you are an average speller or have above average size typing fingers. ![]() |

To be "subpar" is not "average" when it comes to golf. It means you have a well above average score, even though your score is below "par".
![]() And when it comes to arithmetic, there are a few ways to determine "average". |

Yes, Average is one of those words that can mean anything from pretty bad to excellent - the meaning & importance of the word depends completely on context.
What does it pay to be an average professional Baseball or Football player? Start a machining process and look at dimensional data - average is awesome! And I have worked at jobs where performing better than average did Not get you anything positive - sometimes the opposite - hey, you're so good, let's give you part of that guy's work load, now it may require you to work some free OT but hey - congrats! That kind of thing can really make you think more about being 'Average'. Being pretty average physically, it's hard not to think how cool it would have been to be six feet tall or something. But hey on the plus side, everything made in the world today is made to fit Me! My feet never hang off the end of the bed, never been in a car or truck where the drivers seat wouldn't go back far enough, almost never bump the top of my head on low stuff, length of pull on every gun I've ever picked up felt pretty good, etc, etc. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that, once you get out of High School/College, Average just pretty much Always Works! |
