I’ve heard TPWD gill net surveys kill more fish(trout) than croaker soakers every year

In all fairness I don’t keep many trout because I just don’t care to eat them, but my customers can keep their legal limit any day of the week. The trout I do keep go to my granny who loves fresh speckled trout.

Why does it matter what is used to catch trout? If it catches them, which is the point, why not do it?

Cuz bait is for children. Fool them don’t feed them. Might as well buy it at H-E-B if you’re just after the meat.

Catch em however you want as long as itís legal. I donít feel like anyone has to fish like me to do it ďrightĒ, I just know how I like to fish (not live bait btw). Respect the resource and donít be an a** hat works for me

I agree, let's toss deer feeders in there to .
Bait is for those who posess 0 skills.
If catching or killing is the only goal, leaving skill out of the equation, then by all means, be a baiter .

I’ll give you a weekend at my lease in south Texas to kill a 7.5 yo buck and don’t use a feeder, give you a good test of those “skills”.

I could kill a decent buck just driving around on the Ranger just about any time I felt like it. Zeroing in a particular deer, whole different ball game.

I’d like everyone to remember 10% of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish, so all the talk everyone is reading here, only couple of these hero’s actually catch em. 90% of the people posting couldn’t catch a limit if you held a gun to their head.

Just takes lots of time and dedication brother, a weekend would hardly cut it.
Time and dedication is something most people don't have anymore, I completely understand that aspect.
But bait is bait, and there are plenty of people who kill mature deer every year without the need for a feeder.

Some people go fishing 10 - 15 times a year and keep 2-3 fish each time. If go to La. once and keep 10 trout, what is the difference?

Even with feeders running on a pretty sweet, managed south Texas ranch, we killed 3 trophies out of 11 guys. It ain’t quite as easy as you make it out to be. Fishing is different because you’re only looking for 15 inches.

Oh now bait is different?...lol

For the record, I don't give a **** either way. I was artie only for bass and artie/bait for crappie, striper and saltwater but as I've gotten older it don't make a **** to me ....except for the ego stroke on lures.

Yes etxbuckman, the 5 fish limit will help for sure. People just need to respect the resource, that’s all.

Hunting and fishing aren’t even close to apples and oranges. I’m not saying at lures only is the way to go, only that bait is for women folk and children, and for the men that have to justify their trip.

Iíll have bait on my boat when my wife and kids are with me. Oh and when I invite Smart to come.

If I canít catch them on artificials I just assume not catch them.

Except catfish, I will use bait, but I digress.

As I read this artificial vs live bait crap. It sounds alot like traditional vs wheels and Damm sure don't use a crossbow. What ever floats you're boat. I've fished the coast my whole life and if the limit was 25 that was my goal 25. According to most of yall nobody keeps any fish at all I call bs. After you catch a big trout drag it around half the morning get your pictures it going to die anyway might as well throw it in the cooler too. I pray that our fishery comes back soon .

A whole lotta ignorance in this thread.. And for the record, I caught all of those big trout back in 83 on LIVE SHRIMP(Free shrimping)... No one back then was using croaker.. It was unheard of.. I wish I would have been one of the first to figure out that Trout love them... Now we did use live piggy perch from time to time with great results(big trout love them)but catching them was time consuming.. These days true Piggys are hard to find/catch..
Now days I am primarily a lure chunker not because it is more challenging but because a lot of times it just easier and less stressful.. But I wont hesitate to use live bait if someone wants to.. I guess you can say I am just a fisherman.. I love to fish...
Holier than thou Purest make me giggle..

A few on this thread know I'm no great freshwater fisherman, I'm even worse in the salt, but just like hunting, I like it because I can do it MY way. If I am in the mood to catch a higher number, I use live bait. If I feel like being more sporting, I use lures.

If I'm on a guided trip I do whatever the guide tell me to do, I'm there to catch fish and he knows how to do it. Panhandle hunter knows, I tell the guide to tell me what to do and I will do it.

Yup we used to use piggies, finger mullet or even pinfish in addition to shrimp back in those days depending on what we were after if we could find them. Dad was pretty handy with a big cast net and taught us the same. He had his places to go throw a net. But mostly it was shrimp and then lures. We threw our fair share of touts and gold spoons. I donít think I threw a croaker until I was into my late 20s on a visit back home as Iíd already graduated college and moved to DFW by then. Folks today would laugh at the saltwater plastics selection we had back then compared to today. I wish we had todayís selection back then as it would have been stupid easy ....we thought we had it good when the strawberry shrimptail and the chartreuse ďwormĒ were the rage.

On edit.. I forgot about Bingos and mirrolures too. We got real fancy when the broken- back jerk baits came along. I think they were cotton-cordells and rapalas iirc. Been awhile.

Well, my attitude is the problem. If the limit is 5 fish, I want to keep 5 fish every time I go out.
I should keep just what I plan on eating then. After eating those fish, go catch more.
I hear too many people throwing away freezer burned fish from last year.

I love those jointed Redfin baits. Iíve been trying to get ahold of the (Jesse) arsola special. I still buy quite a few baits from H&H tackle, lots of old school plastics that still work and are about 1/3 the price of all the fancier more hyped up plastics. If anyone has one of those arsola customized broken backs or any double trouble worms Iíd gladly buy them from you.

Been 5 for a few years now. Even longer where the freeze killed more fish
