With livestock if they die in a tank they were either too weak to get out are were in there because they had fever. Not a Vet but I've seen many a calf are cow in water when they had a fever.

Darn shame. Yotes or dogs sometimes drive them to water when they are wounded
I suspect he had a small entrance wound also

Tell me something.. why does everyone say it’s a shame? The buck got to live old and die a natural death instead of being hunted down and killed. It’s nature. Nothing shameful about it.

I get wishing I could have killed it, but it’s not a shame. Not a waste either. Other critters gotta eat too.
