Please explain how I would have managed that. The fish was on a metal stringer...if I let the snake swallow the fish he would have swallowed the stringer as well.

Shake him off then take the fish off the stringer and place him back into the waters edge. Snake is not leaving and he'll be back on the fish in a couple minuets, its always worked for me. Sometimes the fish is too big for them and they give up after a couple hours. I fished a small narrow creek on the deer lease, Tarkington Bayou. You leave a fish on a stringer in the water you'll have a water snake latched on to it.
