Timing more than anything. Always going to be someone tromping through, but if it's at the wrong time, set was blown. Cost of doing business to your point, but still a crappy outcome.

Yeah it sucks when you find a good spot, set up and then someone comes through. Cant be mad at them though, weve all come through on someone at some point.
Now if he sees me and sets up 20 yards down hes going to find poison ivy or something rubbed all over his stand the next day when he shows up! Ha!

I logged 5 miles Saturday and almost screwed myself with dehydration. 2 bottles of water was not enough. Guys, take more than enough water, especially if you are going to be walking a lot. 1/2 your body weight in ounces will help keep you out of trouble.

Travis and I tromped around Sunday morning logging 5.6 miles. He needs some good boots besides those 20" tall stiff snake boots. Anyone have any to donate? or maybe just some ankle pads...LOL

Glad it didn't go worse than it did for you brother. That spot will pay in spades.

@travisn321, $40 snake gaiters on top of some waterproof hikers. Covered about 3 miles of soft ground and felt decent at the end of it.

You know alot of people jump to the hunting boots but what i have used all my years is military boots. Cheap, last you a hell of a long time, and if you get them broke in they aren't bad at all. i always wear the everlast snake guards. itll be the best $40 ever spent if i dont get bit.

How "snaky" is it out there, anyway? Been a while since I duck hunted over at Sore Finger, but never saw any crooked critters around there.

I haven't seen any curvy sticks and I've logged 65 walking miles over the past 40 days.

Saw a couple of king snakes, nothing to be frightened over. They did save my ankles from a buried barbed wire fence out in Willis Creek. Ain't worried about a snake hit after that. Txhushlife is right, best $40 I've spent on my gear.

you know as much stomping around as i have done out there, i have only come across water moccasins, never seen a rattler out there or copper head either....doesnt mean they arent there but me the water snakes tend to find each other every time.

Hydration starts the day before your hike not the day of and that includes what you eat. Carbs and salt will retain the water for the next days hike.

I almost stepped on a 4 1/2 foot rattle bug on the north side of Willis last week. They are out there, especially with the tall grass. This was the first one I've seen, but if there is one....There was some snake hunter or venom hunter tv show that did an episode at Granger Lake a few years back. I don't know how staged it was, but they caught several out there. They went out on a peninsula they call "rattlesnake island" on the lake...Never heard of that until the show. May have been all for dramatics...

Well if ya think about it there is no other boot put through so much hell and back then the military style boot to last you a long time. i prefer the more flexibility in a boot as well. not saying the hunting boots are good enough but for the money and the life span they are worth the money.

I'd say so, if he was hunting from the road that's strike one. Without a permit for that PHL area is strike two, with a rifle is strike three. Texas is part of an interstate co-op which means he loses hunting rights in those states also if I understand that correctly. And he doesn't get to keep the deer. Dip sht

I think they still can but I doubt they do that for one deer. That's likely reserved for the most foul, egregious repeat offender maybe? Either way I wouldn't be upset for him if they throw the book at him. He should be flogged by all the hunters awarded a permit for Granger.

Anyone have soap on a rope to donate? I get 1 hr of internet time in lieu of a phone call.
Spending it with you guys!

Bloodtrailer's baby buck wasn't worth it. Ground score was only 87 inches.

Where did you see/hear about the poacher? Interested in seeing the details of where it happened, how they caught em, and what the deer looked like. I hear they have had some issues with poachers...

Poaching happens at granger alot. People will come out and walk around hunting with rifles and or shotguns and just play stupid like its legal! I have yelled at a few ft hooders b4. But its not just them! Some just walk around looking for trail cameras and feeders to steal!

Opening day is my sons day to bring doe a slicky.
Sunday is my day.

1 day to go!!

Don't worry guys/gals. If you need advice on where to hunt, hit me up. I'll be more than happy to share all my OnX files and data points. With over 70 miles logged scouting up to today, I have a pretty good handle on the big boys, slick heads and hunters. We just have to play the wind correctly.

Live hunt with my 10 year old at Granger on Saturday and Sunday.
Boat and truck loaded.
Pictures to come!

Lake is 8 feet high, with the flooding are they holding back the hunters like some of the other WMA's?
