The lighter side of the 6.5 creedmoor

Looking for a kid load. What are some lighter weight options that have performed on game. Talking 85-120max. Cheap is a bonus.

Bolt or gas? Gas gun has no recoil but I've loaded 85-160gr and they've all killed hogs. With smaller under 100gr bullets. Head shots only.

How young is your kid? My 10 year old son (75 lbs soaking wet) shoots 147 grain out of the Ruger American just fine. I know it doesn’t answer your question specifically. Trying to give you something to compare.

The bullet weight doesn't necessarily effect recoil energy. So, if you compare a factory 120 gr to a 147 gr, it's going to be very similar. My wife shoots 129 gr. Hornady Interlocks out of her 6.5 Creedmoor and has taken 240 lb axis, numerous hogs (one single-shot double kill both through head) and a very nice blackbuck. She's got a Weatherby Camilla which has a shorter barrel and stock (very lite rifle)

There are a lot of factory made bullets in the 120-125 class these days. Academy carries a couple different loads in that range. I know Hornady has a 120gr GMX load that I've considered switching to. I know there is an 85gr Vmax from Hornady as well but that's primarily a varmint load.

Put a brake or a can on it.

This would be my vote. I have Weatherby Vanguards in .223, 6.5, and .30-06. Only the .30-06 has a brake. Reduced recoil .30-06 loads are almost identical to 6.5 Creedmoor loads (bullet weight and velocity, not terminal ballistics). Shooting the reduced .30-06 loads with the brake is almost identical to the .223loads, so a 6.5 with a brake should be the same.

They don’t actually make reduced 6.5 factory loads, but they do for 7mm-08 if you’re looking at getting another rifle.

If you can do the wait, a can is 100% the best answer. I just put one on a 7mag and it’s amazing how much it cuts the recoil.

They slowed it way down, though...

Nosler has a 120 grain e-tip load that is a little slower the than the fastest 140s @ about 2850 or so FPS.

Also maybe the Hornday varmint round mentioned above.
