YEARling. 0ne year old. Between 1 and 2.

I used to think the spotless fawns were yearlings too.

I don't shoot doe with yearlings with her, just a rule I have on my place. We have plenty of doe without yearlings and they're fair game.

Not exactly. Usually a big fat cow is barren.

        also > 1 yo = fawn
        1 yo = yearling

For me if I am shooting does I try to shoot the oldest. I'm not very good at aging them, but I can tell if its 1.5 & under and won't shoot them. That's like keeping your heifers.

I've read that a fawn has to weigh a minimum of 70 pounds to breed. Haven't heard of the 6 month requirement.

I normally look for the largest of the group and make sure there aren't in with spots...whitetail wise.

If it was born same calendar year I'm hunting I call it a fawn.

Not sure if they were related or what but I filmed a Turkey trying to get the one I shot to stand back up.
Starts at about a minute and a half in to the video.

Not to mention we only have 5 tags. Older deer equal more meet. What do you get off a 6 month old? 6 pounds? Lol.

I did it ONCE back in the day as a youngster....and after that yearling followed the truck back to camp & stuck around for (2) days, I swore I’d never do it again...

30 pounds of meat from 5 babies vs 25 pounds of meat from 1 mature buck. Or maybe 30 pounds from 2 mature does.

Does kick their buck fawns early in the season. I figure doe fawns can be independent at the same point.

Once they loose their spots, they are weaned and it’s game on.
