Wood wasp is what we call them. But I believe they are called horn tails. They use that to bore into trees to lay eggs. You will see little saw dust piles at the base of the tree many times.

Well that sucker is lost, because I live in Lubbock and we don’t know what trees are! He probably wasn’t injured, just dying of exhaustion flying around trying to find a durn tree!
