I've cooked the shoulders before by putting the upper part of shoulder in the crock pot with taters and carrots and beef broth, lay some bacon strips on top and it's one of the best roasts ever. The shoulder blade will pull out easy

Use your favoite rub and cover the shoulder
          black pepper to taste
put the shoulder on the smoker (temp 230-260)
Smoke it for an hour to an hour and a half
Put it in an aluminum pan
          add a whole chopped onion
jalapenoes (as many as you want)
add a bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce (cover the whole shoulder)
pour a full beer to the bottom of the pan
cover with foil and place back on the smoker for 3-4 more hours at the same temp.
check periodically and add bbq sauce when needed.
When done the meat will fall off the bone and is delicious, i also like to put the meat on a tortilla with the onions and jalapenoes and eat it that way. Hope this helps!!
Necroposting because I did this last weekend and it was delicious.

I like them over charcoal all covered up with a lid. Get charcoal area to about 225-250 degrees and cook until you think it is done. I inject mine with pineapple juice to help keep moist and not cover up the deer taste like many other things do in my opinion. I do small pigs the same way.
