    Anybody Wanna Kill a Mastodon

I recently acquired this fine Ruger No. 1 S 45-70. Since I tend to be a reckless individual, I ordered some plain base aluminum gas checks from Sage’s Outdoors for the 405 grain mold I already have; since this should get me to max velocity without stripping the rifling with Ruger loads. I ended up loading half a dozen rounds with a max Marlin charge with 55 grains of 3031 since I didn’t have any h4831 on hand. I plan on shooting it tomorrow.. videos will follow.

This load should do about 1900 FPS with the 22” barrel.

            Purty bullets for sho

What's the scope for? Surely your eyes are fine for the max accuracy range of 3" groups at 90yds

But seriously, watching to learn more and what results are proven. I had a O/U paired with a 12g back in college. We all had fun with that gun. Good Luck.

Without the scope it would be 9” at 90 yards

Yes, but I fail to see how that plays into the subject.

I cast and load those same bullets in min, mine fall out closer to 420 grains. I currently shoot the Beartooth 405 WFN with 51 grains of 3031. That 55 grain load will loosen your fillings in that light rifle, I stopped at 53 and backed off to 51 for a quicker recovery in my levergun.

H4831 is too slow a powder for that big of a bore. 3031 is going to give you top velocities, I've been able to push the Hornady 350gr to 2300fps with it out of a 28" barrel.

I'd be interested in your results on the AL plain base gas checks. I tried them recently and accuracy was worse than plain PC but that was with trailboss loads.

3031 isn’t even listed for the modern rifle loads. 4831 or 335 are the top performers for hodgdon/imr.

In cause I like big bores, and big boars.

I'ma also wonder-n how the recoil compares to a 440gr lead load from a 12ga at 1900 fps with the same weight rifle.
