Removing a member from a deer lease

I wasn't kidding. New guy gets on lease. He gets the old nasty thick pasture noone wants to hunt. Thats where the big deer hang out in daylight but noone bothers hunting that mess. New guy does his housework and puts in a couple killer setups. Gets deer on camera noone knew existed . Kills a monster. Find a reason to run him off. Next year owners son or lease managers dad have that spot.

I know a guy that absolutely lost 3 leases in 4 years for exactly that. He killed 4 studs though.

I know that's not the case here but it absolutely happens.

Oh I believe you.. I was on a 10 man lease that "allowed" bowhunting "per the written rules". Only 2 of us bowhunted..
In years 5 and 6 of being on the lease I killed a big deer, 2 years in a row, during bow season and boy did the lips started dragging the ground.."It wasn't fair" some where saying.. The next lease meeting we had they wanted to axe bowhunting.. Lol imagine that..

The landowner happen to stop by camp one night and I told him what was going on and he said that if they didn't like bowhunting then they could all leave.. I just decided to bow out and let them have it. It wasn't that good of a place or group anyway.. Very non-management minded..

I assume you are leasing and your lease term is one year. I'd have to see the document, but there's normally no obligation for you or him or anyone else to renew. The right for him to be on the property comes from the landowner, so if he is not going to be on the lease next year, then you should make the landowner aware. If his name is not on the lease, then you don't need to involve the landowner, just make sure you honor any verbal or written agreement you have with him. That could be painful, but it is the right thing to do and keeps you out of legal issues. As others have said, you need to provide written notice and give him 30 days or whatever the documents requires to remove his stuff. Once that time is over, change the locks and whatever he leaves no longer belongs to him. No need to talk about what he did if the term is over, just simply tell him he is not being offered the opportunity to renew. You aren't obligated to explain. Just make sure the other members are on board and do not correspond with him as they could undercut the process, even unintentionally.

Have done it 3 times in the past...
1. don't do it alone. Have a co-manager with you.
2. Have a written copy of your lease rules/contract to reference.
3. Give the specific reason(s) and point out the violation(s) in the rules
4. I do it at the end of the lease year unless it is an immediate termination offense.

5. Give them the standard time to get personal equipment/gear off the property. After that time has passed they need to understand that if they tresspass onto the property, that they will be filed on for criminal tresspass.


If you don't have a written set of rules/contract, Good luck. Hope it goes well for you. If it does get ugly, escort the offender off the property and change the locks on the gate/access to the property immediately and notify all other members... (in writing).

Exactly how we handle the situation. We’ve only had to do it once in over 40yrs of club existence. That was 2yrs ago. He had been suspended a season several years prior for a violation of the rules.

This right here. There’s very few men left in this world. I like straight and to the point. And I’d be there when they packed their “stuff “ making sure they don’t damage anything or take something that wasn’t theirs.
