50" cattle panels

I am at my wits end with these cows. Going to pull up the pens made of hog panels and rebuild with cattle panels. My concern is being too high and deter deer from jumping in the pen. The pen will be 75' diameter. Thoughts?

We use to raise the hog panels 12-14" off the ground.... more deer will go under than you would think.... They can still jump over if they want. Of course if your trying to keep hogs out that won't help you any.

i cut 2 panels on opposite sides 2 squares short. i've had some jumpy cows in the past and they never got in, but jumpy cows get sent to auction at my place.

On our place we have cattle and generally do not have issues with them trying to get in our pens. I see in you pic that you have cottonseed setups in you pen. The ONLY times we have had issues with cows jumping in or tearing up feedpens is to get to cottonseed cages or protein feeders that were set up closer to the edges of the feedpen. Feedpens that have the protein feeder and cottonseed feeders near the middle of the feedpens have not had problems with cows. Most of our feedpens are 45'-50' in diameter and we use panels that are 3' high and 20' long. Just something you may look at or take into consideration. Because it doesn't matter how high panels are, because if cows are hungry and they can smell and see cottonseed feeders or protein feeders because it is close to the edge of the feedpen they will bust into the feedpens to get to it.

Instead of pulling up the hog panels
Just add the cattle panels to them. Not height wise but on the ground. This will reinforce the bottom third of it and save you some work

Made 2 pens out of the cattle panels last spring. Like said above, i cut the top 2 squares off a few of the panels on different sides of pen. Used 10-12 panels. The trick is making it big enough that the deer feel comfortable being in there with a quick exit. Judging by TC, the deer predominantly use the cut panels. Took the deer about a month to catch on in new location. After that they would empty 1800 lb every 5-6 weeks. Zero pics of cows or hogs

So that was my first move. I drilled and set 3 timbers in each corner of the pen and made deadmen then drilled and set timbers at 10' increments. Got the nastiest barbwire I could bvuy from MG Building materials. Strung first strand at 6" above hog panel and second strand 12" above hog panel. Stretched it all tight and secured to timbers and T post. That lasted two days. Cows blow right through it. Ended up repairing replacing barb wire 6 times over two months. It does not work.

My pens are 75' x 75' and cotton is nowhere near the edge of the pens.

OK that was an option I was thinking of as well. My problem is the two cow problem pens are right next to the road. Like right on the edge of the road. So I would have to move the entire pen or divert the road. Then build barbed wire perimeter pen and another 12' wide gate. If you have the room to do what you are talking about that seems like a good idea.

Maybe cut the top square off of the cattle panels, making them about 4 inches shorter but leaving spikes on top. That should stop the cows from leaning on them, and make the deer jump high enough to clear the spikes without catching their back feet under the top wire.

Here is my plan.
20' x 50" cattle panels
drill and set 4x4 post at each corner. (round pen will not work at this location)
drill and set 4x4 post where panels over lap

If you have anything like cotton seed or protein in the pen, cows will get in at times of low natural feed availability no matter what. I had to stop feeding protein on our home place around 8 years ago due to my father's cows. We bought 48" tall tube panels costing $80 a piece back then for all of our pens to try to keep them out. All they did was attempt to jump, bending the panels in the process, and still got in when they wanted. Sucks but it is what it is I guess.

Before that I had built barbed wire pens, but the hogs simply slept under the protein feeder every night, then got up and shook all of the feed out until it was empty.

Build a 5 stand barb wire fence even larger than your panel fence deer will have to go under that then over the panels. but those cattle sounds like a pita

Well I considered this; however the two pens I am having problems with border a road. To do this I would have to move pen or divert road. Both of these are not an option sadly.

We fought this battle for years. Pipe H brace corners, hog panels, and two strands of barbed wire on top, as tight as a fiddle string. Cows jumped it without clicking a hoof. Had a couple of the guys on the ranch use cattle panel and in a couple of spots they would just cut out the upper section. Deer used that spot to jump in and it wasn't really wide enough for cattle to use. Thankfully, all cattle are off of our ranch right now and we are praying the next batch don't like to jump.

This is what I am hoping works. In a couple weeks I am going to get down there and build it. I will report back on what happens after its built.

What is crazy is these two problem pens have been in place for 10 years. Never a cow problem until 2020 season. All it took was one cow to jump in the pen. She educated the rest of them and now its a dang free for all.

If you want to save a !little money, you can use concrete wire mesh instead of cattle panels. These come 8x20' so if you cut them in half longways you get 48" x 20'. They are not galvanized (just bare iron) but when I bought some last year they were $36 each so in effect you get a panel for less than $20.

Run t posts outside your pen and run a solar electric fence panel couple 15 yards outside around. Deer will hop it and keep cattle out. Pigs will stop at cattle panel. Cheap and effective. Keep it higher than waist level for cattle.

Buy the guilty cattle from the rancher and turn them into hamburger. I had this problem in Jacksboro for awhile. Basically had to build a fortress around the feeders to keep them safe. Sounds like that's your plan. Good luck. A fence jumping bovine is a menace. The bastages learn to get their heads on top of a fence then lean on it to bring it down. Once they get it low enough they just hop over it like a low hurdler. Maddening.

That is exactly right. My plan is to make it to where they wont be able to do this.

We used the Goat panels 13ea that latch together and it made a great size pen. We have Whitetails and Axis jump in with no pigs or cows. We paid 1100.00 for 26 panels best investment ever. Here is a picture.

I am also in McMullen county and had no problems with hog panels until the season before last. I changed that pen to 52” cattle panels with a few jumps. I hadn’t had any issue since November 2019 until last month.

We can only go once a month in the off-season so I am very curious what my pen will look like next week. I know they are getting in from cell cameras. Pigs are getting in also so it must be bad. I will likely bring some electric fence material next week.

Well I finished mine up on Friday. So far only deer jumping in the pen. Hope this works.

I tried that. First with one wire, then with two wires. Cows acted like it wasn't even there.

Hate seeing others fighting the same fight I am fighting. For years I had a corn slinger only with a hog panel fence. Once I added a protein feeder, the war began. A couple different trips straightening fence and standing a feeder back up forced me to buy the taller panels. I installed them over the hog panels and cut out 3 narrow sections to make life easier on the deer. The <insert expletive> cows found the opening and smashed them down again. I went back and had to run barbed wire in the openings to close em off. I haven't been back to check if the barbed wire solved my problem.

Just finished a 3 strand barb wire fence to keep the cows at bay. So dry down south and the are tearing up everyone’s feed pens to get to CS. Had to fence them out of my feed pen. Hopefully it works.

I repaired my pen this weekend. I had this idea to build a “jump area” with spots for the deer to crawl under the cattle panel. I am curious how this will work - the cattle panels were keeping does and fawns out.

I have had a crawl space before, but allowed the darn pigs to get in.

We had some guys try that but the pigs tore them up. My crawl spaces are behind a hog panel.

In theory, the hogs can’t get past the hog panel and if the cattle get over the hog panel, they would be deterred by the 52” panels.

So far the cattle panels are working great. Has not affected the deer at all.
