Default Why are so many people accidentally putting DEF in their pickup fuel tanks?

The openings are clearly labeled. Are people just so distracted and in a constant blur that they no longer read or see the obvious? Is everyone on drugs of some sort or what?

Buddy did it after getting no sleep and going to be by his moms side as she passed away. It happens. 30 years of muscle memory picking up handle and instinctively putting it in the fuel tank. 2 gallons of def into fuel tank before he realized it. He shut pump off went to get in truck and kill it and the engine died. Truck was a 14 dodge along with the small amount of hail damage considered totaled.

I have a skid steer at work with diesel in the def tank, looking at around 10-15 grand to fix it. Not sure how they did it because the opening is a lot smaller then the fuel opening

They used a fuel can to put in the DEF tank.

One would think that the design engineers of trucks and equipment would figure out to have the DEF tank as far away as possible from the fuel tank.

I have nothing to contribute to the OP post. But here's a similar story from my younger days.

Years and years ago I went home to visit and I was out with some friends, they was getting their drunk on so I was the designated driver. Which in itself was a challenge, I didn't know my way around. Hadn't been home in years.

Anyways we needed gas, my car ran leaded his ran unleaded. Anyways I couldn't figure out why the pump nozzle wouldn't fit in there tank. I filled it anyways, took a bit to fill.

My father in law filled his Dodge Cummins up with 25 gallons of gas a few months back.... He's been driving diesels for 40 years. He said he got out of the truck and just started filling it up while he was thinking about something else. Didn't realize it until the pump kicked off. I had to go buy 6 gas cans and help him siphon the gas out..

My FIL did this to his F250. Luckily never started it and only cost him around 1000 to have the dealer clean the tank. He had his head in his *** but he won’t do it again.

One of the cartel guys that kidnapped me filled my truck up after he washed it. He put DEF in my tank. I was trying to tell him, but the tape over my mouth and the kick to the stomach wouldn't allow me. Nice guy though.

If my diesel trucks were new enough to have DEF systems, they wouldn't have DEF systems for long. Delete that BS.

Cellphone usage at the pumps causing fires remains urban legend

https://www.pei.org/static

Are Cell Phones Responsible?
No. We have not documented a single incident that was caused by a cellular telephone.

Cell phones continue to be cited as causing fires at the pump in e-mails circulating on the Internet. So far, we have been unable to document any incidents that were sparked by a cellular telephone. In fact, many researchers have tried to ignite fuel vapors with a cell phone and failed.

PEI still advises against using any electronic device that might distract the motorist during the refueling process.

I completely filled up my 6.7 with gas one time while it was still running. Only made it about 1/2 mile before it started acting up and I immediately knew what happened. Pulled over and Shut it off as fast as I could. Cost about 8500 if I remember correctly. I filled it on my insurance and they paid it! Lol
In my defense I was distracted by a very well endowed and beautiful blonde!

No impossible

“”Diesel exhaust fluid, commonly referred to as DEF, is a solution of 67.5% deionized water and 32.5% high-purity urea, that's used to chemically reduce nitrogen oxides emissions (NOx) from non-road mobile machinery and heavy equipment. ... DEF is not toxic or harmful to humans or animals. DEF is not flammable or explosive.””

Ouch. On my work credit card, I wrote WORK in large letters using a sharpie. At my cabin, I cover the AC unit with a large black storage bin. I had to write on duck tape placed on the inside of the cabin that says “please remove cover”. I screw up from time to time...so I make it a point to cover my bases.

All my gas/fuel cans are marked if they are diesel or gas. I never use either for another type of fuel.

Why ? We use the correct color code cans ( mainly because we have some guys that can’t read English and some are just idiots)
To avoid any confusion “ I still do the smell test just Incase “
