Default Knee replacement

Any of had a knee replacement? I'm scheduled for my right knee to be replaced in early December. I'm apprehensive and wondered if you could share your experience relative to rehab, pain expectations, length of rehab etc. Thanks.

Had one plus a revision. Expect at least a full recovery to last about 4-6 months. Keep up with PT. Take Tylenol or some kind of pain med right before pt. Good luck to you.

I had my left knee replaced, 8-9 years ago. My first few days were painful. They had done a nerve block but they had issues with it.
I was working after 2 weeks. I just sat on a job site all day.
Physical therapy is important. Some days are painful, some not to bad. You have to push through it.

But in the end it was well worth it

A young man like you, Matt, should shake it off in no time!

I had an elderly lady client (late 80's) once who had a knee replacement. I looked up to see her walking into my office less than 2 weeks after her surgery! She said it was so easy that she was going to have her other knee done!

Don't be a wuss!

I had my right knee replaced October 1 this year and a left knee revision November 5 this year (2 weeks ago) . I went back to work yesterday. I work construction out in the field. Been off all pain meds for over a week. Just taking Tylenol now. Have about 3 more weeks of therapy to go. Not that bad. Just do the therapy. The Dr. will have you up and walking the same day as the surgery.

Oh yeah, the revision is a lot more painful than the replacement.

Following. I may be in the same situation come January, but might be able to get by with a partial replacement.

He asked how long. I stated full recovery time frame. I had a total of 13 surgeries including my two replacements. Scar tissue is a pain. First replacement had cement broken and still worked on an airport ramp for 3 years. Every time I got up, my knee locked until I walked 10 steps it so. Then went to the medical field. After another 3 yrs I decide to have a revision. I was up and walking within 3 wks. Went back to work in 8 wks in a trauma 2 ER. Didnít have full ROM until month 4. Didnít feel my best until month 6. So you want to call me a wuss? You can kiss my Redneck butt. Until you have walked in my shoes, keep the name calling to yourself. And if you ainít down with that, Iíve got two words for ya...

Just trying to set the record straight. And all you had to say to me was ďsorry. That was meant for someone else.Ē And left it there. You didnít have to add in all the other comments.

Sounds like the reason YOU shouldn't respond.

Randy: You know me I'm not a wuss until it's being done to me then all bets are off. Thanks for the comments. Don't know what a revision is but mine is just a straight replacement.

It's all been said, Keep up with PT! I've had both knees replaced. One in July '18 and the other Aug. this year. lot's of pain first few days but started PT 3rd day out of operation. Took me about a year to get full strength back in the first one but pain was gone in a month. never took anything but Aleve. Great relief from worn out original equipment. First one I was back @ work in 5 weeks and this year was back in 6. But that was @ the request of the company Doc, not me.
Was told to keep up with exercises for one year, it helps.

I know several people that have done it, all with different results, but one thing that is essential for any positive results is the therapy, which they will start as soon as you wake up. And typically send you home with a machine that will move the leg for you.

Is that the scar tissue removal process?

I had both knees replaced in Febuary 2015. The first 4 weeks were the worst. I only have one regret! I wish I would have done it sooner. I really like my new knees. Good luck.

emttex, Iím sorry I hurt your feelings . I just assumed you knew my response was directed to Matt since I referenced his name in my post. I assumed too much, I guess. My bad. Again, I am sorry your feelings were bruised.

A revision is a complete re-do. Usually for someone who has had the replacement for long periods of time or if the replacement fails due to any number of reasons.

Glad they make you check your guns at the door here...Phew!

Had ACL replacement and torn meniscus repair, Now have torn meniscus root.
My Orthopedist said knee replacement is on the horizon for me. He is not in a rush to do surgery and wants the most mileage out of my God given equipment before we call NAPA
Being retired, I do not need the super powers I needed when working.
Knee replacement is NOT a forever fix. Depending on how active you are will determine the wear or accelerated wear. Revision(going back in) is common in 7-12 years...again, on how active you are.
Good luck, stay off meds as much as possible. Tens unit helps with pain.

Unless youíre really aggressive on you knee or considerably overweight, you should get at least 10-15 years out of a knee replacement. Iíve had patients with knees over 20 years old.

I was/am a wuss about tkr (total knee replacement). So for now, I got a knee rhizotomy until I get the balls to do it.

My problem is, I watched the youtube videos of the procedure.

Kick butt and get it done! From what everyone that has had it done, no REGERTS!

Wow have been off the sight for a couple of years, clicked on this thread and walked right into a shat storm! Anyway, I need two partial knee replacements very badly and intend to have em done as soon as possible. I’m 64 now and can barely kneel down and have to hold onto something to stand up. Not fun. Don’t wait like I’ve done.
I was having knee injections every four months then we moved to Colorado. Ended up coming back last week after wife’s job didn’t work out so was without insurance for a while. We’re in open enrollment now so hopefully I can get both of them done or at least get back on my shots. I was told that the procedure has come a very long way. I worked at Baylor Scott&white in College Station before moving and talked to several reps that sold knee replacements. They worked for Stryker. Looking forward to getting my life back.

I had an elderly lady client (late 80's) once who had a knee replacement. I looked up to see her walking into my office less than 2 weeks after her surgery! She said it was so easy that she was going to have her other knee done!

Don't be a wuss!
In the interest of fair disclosure, I now remember that my elderly client's replacements were her HIPS rather than her KNEES.

Also, I figured out why emttex flew off the handle at me for kidding Rustled Again. Both of them are named Matt , so THAT is why he thought my kidding was directed at him. I don't understand why he didn't explain that. . Carry on. My mind is now settled.

You can have the best surgeon in the world and it will still come down to how you handle your physical therapy. Make sure you do everything they say and get after it for sure. A little pain is big gain in the long term.

A revision is when you have a replacement that didn't hold replaced. They have to take out the old hardware and install new parts that are larger. A lot more involved. Mine is starting to heal pretty good now and PT is getting better.

Listen to your therapist and it's pretty smooth sailing. By listen I mean do your home exercise program consistently and push yourself to get your range of motion back as quick as possible. The strength will come, but the range of motion is crucial at first.
