This year I plan on going on a crane hunt.
Trying to set up a Nebraska/Wyoming trip up for next year but nada this year.

Would love to try that kind of hunt that you mentioned out though!

Wife bought me a pup earlier this year and she’s in month 4 of training at best retrievers. Just received a update that she’s kicking butt (I’m sure everyone with a dog there receives that text) but pretty excited. Get her back during the split and can’t wait to see how she does this year.

Awesome. Glad to hear it. I'm thinking of buying a surface drive soon. The way you handled yours made up my mind

Congrats on the new dog! My pup went to Best Retreivers. They did a great job but I havenít hunted her enough to keep her sharp which is all my fault. We are doing a boot camp right now to get the kinks lined out before big duck season. I think you will be very pleased with your experience with them. One bit of advice, be sure to go there as much as possible and work with the trainers on how to handle and correct the pup. It will make your life so much easier in the long run. I think over half the battle is learning to work the dog correctly versus the dog not doing what it is supposed to.

Just patiently waiting!! This was a public land hunt during teal. We scouted for 4 days to find the birds. Shot our 4 man and 5 man in the last weekend. Love it when scouting pays off!

I’m looking at getting a duck boat but don’t know if I’d be better off with a surface drive or outboard. Currently only hunting the coastal marsh.

If you ever plan on fishing or anything else with it go outboard.

If you're buying it to do nothing but hunt a surface drive can work well.

Which decoy brands do you guys prefer?

I've been running Avian-X but plan on adding 3-4 dozen more this season and was curious who recommends what? Saw hardcore is running a 20% off 1 dz

G&H as far as I know they are the only American made decoy. They are very durable and the paint stands up to years of abuse.

Default New member, first post......as ready as I'll ever be.

Hi all, I am new to this forum as a member but have been lurking in the shadows for a while. This is a great forum from what I've seen. I am certainly ready for duck season to begin, I mostly hunt some farm ponds/stock tanks up near the Milam and Williamson co border, shoot mostly gadwall. This year the landowner put a metal, floating dock on his tank I hunt. Do y'all think that it could have an adverse effect on ducks using this tank as they have in the past? Maybe I could exchange a hunt or two with someone here, would be great to see a sunrise with some different scenery and hopefully shoot some ducks. Tried to post pic but can only enter url, is there any way to just attach it from pic library? Thanks for the help.

I run avian x and dakota flocked mallards. Seems the dakotas have better movement in lower winds. Don't really see many mallards so hardly ever use them.

Two of the ponds I have permission to hunt have large docks on them and they don't bother the birds at all. One was built in between seasons, has a big metal covered thing on the end, etc. It hasn't impacted anything. The other one extends halfway out into the pond and has a powerline running over the top. It makes for some difficult and interesting setups, but doesn't bother the birds a bit.

I would think as long as there's plenty of water around for them to land, it shouldn't bother them.

Went to check on a newborn calf a couple hours ago and the main tank was full of duck. Mostly coots, but a few Gadwall and pintail mixed in.
There was one I couldn't identify. Brave dude, drove up to within 50 yards and it paid me no mind as it was swimming in open water. Pics were taken thru my binos so they are a bit fuzzy.

Man, I've ran both. I'm an outboard guy. Only way I'd do a surface drive would be if I had an aluminum boat that was going to do nothing else but short run duck hunting.

Aluminum boat with an outboard and jack plate will go skinny enough you're pushing it if you stop. That's good enough for me.

I fish out of mine as well and make some long runs to duck spots. Nice having the quiet and extra speed to cruise loaded down.

If youíre walking in donít bother unless you want to get there at 1-2am and be shoulder to shoulder. Only real option is to boat in at most places where possible and even then can be crowded.

Doing Brant, blackduck and seaducks in Massachusetts and Rhode Island this year.

Gonna be too busy for the annual panhandle hunt, or honker hunt in missouri and iowa. Missing a north dakota hunt also.

Oh well, ill get em next year. I hate missing the really good trips that just require diesel and lodging costs.
