This happened to me 5 years ago, discharging my wifes crossbow after a hunt. Luckily, my thumb tip was hanging on by a millimeter of nail and they were able to reattach it. Don't have feeling in that thumb now, but it's a good safety reminder. Most crossbows built in the last several years have protective designs to keep you from doing this.....
