This is Reese’s first Turkey hunt. Went into it blind and set up 50 yards from their roost just by dumb luck. Had a coyote skirt by right at sun up. I don’t know if he didn’t see the decoys or what but he didn’t come in. I started squeaking with my mouth and he came directly to us and was pouncing. I shot him head on at 8 yards. Reese was scared to death. It was awesome.
This was the most active Turkey hunt I’ve ever been on. I almost didn’t even need to call. There were birds gobbling in every direction around is. We had a big Tom hung up on a fence line strutting back and forth about 200 yards out. We had two big Tom’s come within 15 yards of us but they were in the right side and she was set up to shoot to the left. If she would have been where I was setting she would have had a slam dunk on a big gobbler. They were with hens and never made the turn to visit the decoys.
We finally had two Jake’s come into the decoys. Her firsts shot was a clean miss. I couldn’t believe it. Both birds gobbled at the shot but didn’t spook. I told her to start pumping and keep shooting. Her second shot was on target and she gave him a 3rd one as he was trying to get away.
