Default Old Sabine River bottom hog

Shot my first OSR bottom hog with my TC 50cal muzzleloader 12-31-08, hog came out at 90yrds, one shot one pig. Pig was pretty big (between 250 and 300lbs, gutted pig but could not put on my quad, I dragged the pig out to parking lot about 2 miles, lots of fun.

Default Hog makeover

The hog skull is currently going through a makeover, I have already cleaned most of the skull, I am in the process of degreasing it, which will take about a week and then I will bleach it using creame poroxide mixed with white hair dye, still alot of fun, will post more pixs later.

not too crowded now since deer season is over. best bet is to get in the sloughs and listen for them. or you can hang a stand over a trail. either way there are plenty of porkers to go around. general season starts on the 20th. good luck.

I believe the key time is at noon and then right before dark, that is when I have seen them move. Take HG advice, I hung a stand and waited for them to move, just make sure you are downwind from creeks, bottoms or sloughs. If your hunting from the ground get downwind and make sure you are elevated to see them move, once you have found a spot, sit tight and wait them out.
I have finished degreasing skull, I am planning on bleaching it this weekend, will post pixs when done.
I believe I will be going Wednesday or Thursday, the last days of muzzleloader hunt.

Hey, how did you remove all the unwanted junk from that skull? I would like to do one myshelf one day and it looks as if you've got it figured out.

drill a hole at the base of the skull and boil all the meat off the skull if you havent scraped most of it off, then boil the skull with a little bleach in it. when the temperature is just right the brain should drain out of the hole you drilled. comes out like a soup. dont overboil the thing or you could ruin it.

I placed skull in a pot, added a box of baking soda, this brings down the boiling point of water, brought water to a boil, lowered down to a simmer for about 6hrs. The skull already has a hole in the back, all the brain matter came out fairly easy. I also used my air compressor to blowout any remaining stuff on hard to reach areas.
Hey Hand Grenade, when are you going out to the river bottoms?

sweet hand grenade. Nice hog! I'm being told most activity is along the river. The baker tract also has alot of good sign along river. TPW drove the baker tract last week cause landowners were driving on the property so they are thinking of putting up a fence on the south side.

yeah we had a few problems with their dogs running deer during the last few weeks of deer season. but you are right lots of hog sign in the back of the park, but very flooded still. could not go all the way back since my mule is 2 wheel drive. best bet is to set up along the swithcane on the right hand side of the east trail as you travel up it. we got in the switchcane on the last day of the hunt a found several beds and jumped a nice hog out of one patch. but like i said its real slow right now as far as hogs. have only seen hogs by themselves and no groups. but as this place goes its all about being at the right place at the right time. good luck guys and bring home the bacon!!!

Default Nice hog Hand Grenade

Nice hog Hand Grenade, I couldn't make it this week, everyone at home including myself got sick, BUMMER! so I am hoping I will be able to go out next week. A little water/mud won't keep my quad from getting back there, it likes the mud, the muddier the better. All the hogs I've seen have been between the east trail and the the "T", hogs are there, I've seen them all year long in the same spots.
Well, hopefully I will take another hog soon..,
later,later

With all this rain, I would stick to higher land elevations, at least that is what some of the rangers told me last year when it flooded, they told me to go to area around the pump station and look for the hogs in the hills where it would be dryer for them to bed down in. You cannot use your atv in this area..,good luck.

If you look at map it is the last designated hunting road on left side before you get to the last campsite, which is on the river.

Nice pig. Put a 250#ish sow with my longbow at a friends lease outside SA TX. Took us a couple tries to get her in the back of his Jeep.

Way to go Oscar, I have all sort of excuses for not going to OSR bottom, van broke (no ac), car broke (freeze plug needs replacing) and truck broke (it is misfiring) but I still hope I get to go before the end of general hog season.
