Default Powderhorn November 21-23

My daughter was lucky enough to draw powderhorn. Curios if a 25-06 is large enough to knock down a sambar. That is the largest caliber she has shot so far

Put a premium 120 grain bullet in it.

Federal premium or Nosler with a 120 partition should do just fine.

sorry, i thought rifle info was in the thread but it wasnt. i cant remember for sure now but i believe both of ours were taken with a 6.5c.

my youngest regrets shooting the spike so quick now, as our group saw 3 or 4 more mature 3x3s over the hunt. be patient lol.

Just get ready to shoot it twice. I shot a bull with a 150gr 308 in the neck and it tried to stand back up. They are big and tough animals.

One guy shot it with a 6.5 creed facing him and the thing just stood there and looked at him so he shot it again. Missed the vitals on the first trigger pull.

Depending on your position you shoot the first you see if you are on a meat hunt. Some people said Iíll get a bigger one and that was the last one they saw during the hunt.

I’m local and have a 308, and 30-06 if you decide you want to shoot a larger caliber.

Congratulations!!! I’ve been seeing a few on the road nearest the Port O’Connor gate last few weeks in the evening. Good luck!

25-06 should kill it with good shot placement. Or, you can use Fish4food's 3006. He also knows the sambar very well down there.

I neck shot mine with a 140gr Nosler partition 7mm-08. Another hunter had to shoot his twice with a 6.5 creed and Sid it just looked at him funny on the first shot like ďthatís all you gotĒ. I donít think the issue is if it will kill it but that brush is thick and you donít want to be chasing it as youíll be on hands and knees

If I could do my hunt over, I would've staked out one of the solar ponds and sat all day. Ended up shooting my cow at one after walking all day and still hunting. Shot her while she was standing knee deep in the pond with a .308 150-grain cor-lokt. First shot anchored her, but I put a 2nd shot in her just to make sure. My dad and another in our party killed their stags with 30-06's.

I have other guns just don’t want to scare her. She is not the biggest. Have a .308. 6.5 and 7708 also. And then a 7 mag but not sure I want to put her behind it.

Shot mine with a .280 rem first shot quartering away dropped him and he jumped back up almost as quick and went to running stopped on a little rise and I slocked him again. In all honesty he was on wobbly legs at that point and the second probably wasnít needed but I wasnít chancing him getting out of sight second one anchored him

If she is confident and comfortable with the 25-06, I wouldn't hesitate to let her shoot a Sanbar using a premium bullet like a partition or bonded core bullet.

If that is a 7mm-08, I'd opt for that. Take her shooting this weekend. I think that would have more punch. My son shot that caliber when he was young. great gun.

Depending on the compartment, the brush is super thick. If they take off running, it may be a real hard track. BIL had to recover his in the middle of a big pond. Wife shot this bull with a 165grain 308 and he took about 6 steps and went down. They are a lot bigger than they look in pictures. I’d opt for a bigger caliber or a good partition bullet.

I plan on having my son shoot the 7mm-08 on his hunt down there in January. I need to figure out what ammo to shoot though as it is really hard to come by these days.

on the tyhp hunts down there they require a .300 or larger caliber which seems odd to me for a bunch of kids to have to shoot. TPWD does not seem to have any such requirements.

I stalked all day and had a chance to shoot a hind and small spike stag. Went back to the box blind that I had corned real good that morning. As I turned the corner before the blind a stag and a couple hinds we're feeding on the corn. Sealed the deal before getting to the blind.

Keep her shooting what she knows, but I'm saying she'll never notice the recoil of an 06 or 7mag. Shooting at an animal.

My buddy has 2 boys going next weekend and they have been practicing with the 308s. A heavy barrel 308 has very little recoil.

Good luck. 7-08 is fine. Our group shot 3 using 308’s between 60 and 150 yards with 1 shot kills. One ran into a pond and you could barely see her side floating. She ran 40 yards and 20 of that was in the pond. I stalked to 25 yards from a group. They ain’t axis smart. I hope they get one.

We got blinds 5 and 10 because we had a utv. Pretty open but haven’t ventured off much due to the wind and rain. Mostly sitting in truck so far. Not much cover for them in this area
