Default Cottonseed on 40 lb bags.

We put out some cottonseed yesterday. Bought it in Llano in 40 lbs bags as an experiment. Paid $14 for 40 lb sack. It was pretty easy to empty into a cage.

Just a small place and supplementing, not high fenced or high population of deer.
I already have protein feeders in place and food plots, but no real rain in months.

Is my $ better spent on protein by the 50 lb bag unless I am buying cottonseed in Bulk?

Cotton seed in bulk at $160 a ton was worth the added labor to shovel it. Now, just pellet form for me.

Buy bulk cottonseed is about 3 cents a pound. You just paid 35 cents a pound. Not hard to figure out. You can feed more and longer for a little bit of effort. Most gins will sell you a pickup bed full.

3 cents !! I feel dumb.
Well, glad we only got 3 bags as an experiment.

I donít mind the work. I guess it depends on they eat this before I get a truck load.

Thanks.

Fat fingered the calculator. It is 8 cents a pound if you get it for $160 a ton

3 or so years ago we had the gin dump 5 tons at a time for $160 a ton. Once price shot up, we gave it up and back to pellets.

I buy the 1000# super sack for $180 at the gin. no need to shovel into baskets, just back into your pen, have somebody help drag the bag off the trailer, and cut the bag open. Very easy.

I have been getting Cottonseed for $270 at Mereta Coop. $14 a bag is insane someone is making a small fortune. Even at $270 a ton in bulk it’s cheaper than pellets , and it’s so much more in volume Cottonseed vs Pellets way more of a filler. I have never had a problem getting deer started on it. Usually I will add corn mixed in until they take to it.

Yes those big bags are 1000 (1/2 ton)
160 x 2= 320 per ton

But when you load it by hand it weighs 3 tons (feels like)

We used to buy bulk buy the 18 wheeler. We stock piled it and would come out and have deer standing on top of the mountain of cotton seed

We just bought 4 tons at $270/ton. It's still cheaper than protein and if I had to guess protein and corn will continue to rise this year so I'll continue shoveling cottonseed as it does help slow down the consumption of protein and provides another high quality feed for the younger bucks and doe.

Anybody seeing these prices up around Throckmorton? We are going to start on our place but struggling to find in bulk or supersacks at the right price. We are seeing the $14/bag at the local feed stores and know we can do better than that.

I just paid $200 for a 1K sack but a ton was $310. You get a $10 discount if you bring your sacks back. Just like OP, it's our first time trying it. The deer were awful spooky to see the white columns in the feeder pens the first two days. They will obviously settle down but fingers crossed they will eat it.

you have to mix it with something they like or they will ignore it. Its been getting more expensive even in bulk the last 2 years. i am feeding a mix of cotton seed and peanut hay. no matter how you slice it, it's still cheaper than pellets.

I’ve tried it 2 full years with several methods in wood county… deer never touched it. Finally removed cages and hogs ate it.

Now out west, they will eat you in the poor house. Just different herd preference

At the price I can get it, I can still feed protein at same or cheaper… and they eat the protein, which is what they have to do for it to work… that and survive to be older than 3 yo

Middle of summer once most of good browse is gone, they hit it and hit it hard. It took them a while but once they hit it, theyll eat every bit of it.

Google ďTexas Cotton GinsĒ find the ones near you and start calling. Although if you waited until now they most likely will not have any as most gins contract out their cottonseed by now.

Our deer crush cottonseed. I firmly believe that is why we have increased body weights. Our last load was 7 tons at $210 ton.

Bringing this one back up. I thought id try introducing cottonseed and see if I could get them on it this year. Figured id introduce it now when the browse is not as available, and deer are trying to recover from the rut and winter. My initial plan was to get some at the local cotton gin, but they wouldnt sell any/said it was all accounted for. SO...i am trying a single cottonseed feeder and found the Fortified Cottonseed at TSC. Figured id give them a product with some additional attraction value. If I can get them to start eating it, I can keep running it. If they wont touch it after a year....I guess I can simply pull the feeder and move on. I did put the cottonseed feeder close enough to my Tripod broadcast corn feeder so corn is being thrown to the base of the cottonseed feeder. Maybe that will help introduce them to the other feed. Time will tell. My only concern is rain molding the cottonseed over time if they dont eat it in a reasonable amount of time.

Been really wondering about this one... seeing cottonseed at Tractor Supply, but haven't checked the feed stores. @rbjjack, will be curious to see your review if the deer starting hitting the cottonseed. What kind of feeder do you have/use??? Any pictures?
